Morning everyone. Reaching out to see if anyone has been thru what my daughter is having

When she was around 9 months diagnosed with slight lactose intolerance and reflux. She was out on special milk and lansoprazole. When she turned one we tried her on dairy and fine. We gave her soya milk which was also fine.

Since Xmas time she has been having tiny poos thru the day . This is getting worse . She has tried movicol. Etc. The only thing that makes her have a big poo is a pessary .

She saw the consultant about 3 weeks ago who did bloods and poo samples but all clear.

It's becoming a nightmare. She must have around 15 a day her bum is sore and red and she cries in pain when only a bit of poo liquid oozes out. When I settle her for bed . She will fall asleep but then she moans and a little oozes out so then I need to clean and change her again and she's so upset

It ruins the day as she is constantly pooing I feel so bad for her

If anyone can help. Please let me know

Many thanks xx

I'm sorry your little one is suffering with this. You said she used to be lactose intolerant, has she been tested for other allergies? I know for example gluten can affect bowels and other food allergies too. I hope you find out what's causing the problem soon.

I do feel for you we’ve been through the same. Our little one has laxido in her water daily which softens the pop, it helps the body absorb water which makes it easier to pass - our paediatrician was really great explaining it and getting her on it. He said it may take til she’s 4 or 5 to sort itself. We really notice a difference if we haven’t been able to get it for any reason it goes back to pellety poos or little bits of liquid coming out 😫Good luck, hope you find something that works x

Hi that sounds like a cows milk allergy/intolerance to me. I had it as a child and so do my children. I was told the blood test for cows milk allergy is extremely unreliable, so a negative result doesn’t mean it’s not there. Family history and symptoms are a more reliable way to diagnose it.

Allergies can have periods of no symptoms and then come back, especially at that age. Also if the milk allergy is too severe and the body has been exposed to milk for a while, it can then react with anything resembling milk such as soya milk unfortunately. It might be worth removing dairy and trying oat milk for a while to see if that helps. It takes a couple of weeks for symptoms to subside.

I was exactly like your daughter as a child although unfortunately at the time it wasn’t the done thing to remove dairy from diets so I suffered all the way until I was a teenager and instinctively stopped eating dairy myself. It was painful and I can totally empathise!

There are lots of good sources of calcium out there, if it makes your little one better don’t worry too much about removing dairy. Our obsession with dairy is more cultural than science-based.

I hope she feels better soon! Big hug to you too, it’s hard to see them suffer.

Thank you all for the replies. She has had the tests for cows milk allergy. And we have removed dairy from her diet and it didn't make any difference. Now I'm off work I'm trying the movicol plan for a week to see if it works. This morning already had x 6 stools all watery . But this is the norm.

She has had bloods for other allergies and these were negative too x
