Kissed baby with a cold sore

Hi all,

I have a cold sore in the corner of my lip, and accidentally kissed my 2-week old baby on the cheek last night when I got up to feed him, I was very sleepy and didn't control my actions well. I had a special plaster on the sore, and don't think the affected area actually touched my baby, but still. Now I just keep worrying and feeling really bad, having read terrible things about how a herpes virus can affect a small baby. I hope I haven't and won't pass it on to him, have been washing hands like crazy and observing him like a hawk. Just want this cold sore gone from my lip asap... Any advice and support would be greatly appreciated.

Oh my love, chances are that you won't have spread it to your baby. I feel for you because of course the most natural thing in the world is to want to kiss your baby. It's unlikely that the virus will have spread especially if you only kissed the cheek. Please don't worry, you'll notice if baby has any symptoms but I'm sure you've got away with it. Speak to your health visitor next time you see her.

The guilt and worry is a natural part of motherhood and something we all carry. Try to remind yourself what a good job you're doing and that the chances of having passed it on are really slim and get on with enjoying your little bundle of joy.

Thank you so much for this encouraging response! I really hope my cold sore passes soon so that I can leave these worries behind and can kiss my baby again. Really appreciate your kind words!

If you haven’t kissed him on the lips then don’t worry… babies get most of the immunity from their mommy during birth … that’s why you have the cold sore because you passed on everything to your baby and your body is weak now. New mommy makes you anxious even I was washing hands like crazy and had a sore near breast but nothing happened to the baby … your doing good job.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful, will try to not worry too much and just get stronger myself to not have any more fold sores any time soon... Xx
