Very worried I’m miscarrying .. but why did my HCG go up?!

Evening all, this is my first pregnancy.

I found out I was pregnant last week and doctors estimate I am around 5 weeks coming up to 6 but I could potentially be anywhere between 4-6 (I didn’t have regular periods and came off of cerazette end of Jan where I didn’t bleed at all).

Since last Friday I have experienced a small amount of bleeding, never enough to fill a pad ... on some occasions it has been bright pink and a majority of time has been brown in colour. On a couple of occasions was a bit string like but put this down to being discharge. Have not seen any clots. This has occurred with some very mild cramping in my lower right abdomen (I had surgery for ovarian cysts mid feb so it could be this) but this has since subsided and never really been to painful.

My EPU took a couple of blood tests a few days apart and my HCG has gone down by 100 and the nurse (not in a very nice way) said I was miscarrying ... however, I went in to a and e around 12 hours later after this drop and it had gone back up!!!

I don’t know what to make of this and I am expecting the worst tbh....

I have a scan with a consultant tomorrow but it still may be too early for heartbeat as don’t know where I am in my pregnancy... I’m just hoping my bloods show an increase again.

I have had no cramping at all (yet again even when it was there it was mild) for a couple of days and the bleeding has been non existent for past few days as well (not red at all, all brown, none in pad and goes away after wiping, sorry for the TMI!)

Any advice or anyone go through something similar??

Hi there, i am sorry you're going through this. I just wanted to tell you my experience but i am hoping for you that you're not miscarrying. Unfortunately i did. I don't know where you're from but here in the UK, they don't do blood work unless you are miscarrying. Or at least this is what they did with me. I started spotting like you, then it stopped for few days and i thought good, it's nothing. Midwife said it's normal in early pregnancy so i let go. then started spotting again brown ish discharge and never stopped again until i miscarried. Both the GP and midwife said it was normal in early pregnancy so i let go and only later they referred me to the EPU, they scanned me and found out i had a missed MC no blood work, nothing until i miscarried. So i have no idea my HCG levels.

I don't want to worry you even more but i think that being prepared helps to some extent. My point is, in my experience, if the spotting lasts for more then few days is not a good news. Hope it's not your case. the very best of luck!!!

Hiya, I hope all is still well with your pregnancy, and your consultant scan went well. I just thought I'd share my current experience as there are some similarities. I'm just over 9 weeks and have had red/brownish spotting for about 8 days now, much like you, not enough to fill a pad, or even touch it, and goes away on wiping, so the flow is minimal and also not constant. It comes and goes! It's also sometimes accompanied by mild cramping, again not always, nothing major, could even be wind or a poop!

I have hounded my midwife service almost every other day and they have advised that unless there are major cramps then generally the bleeding is just something that will happen and go when it's ready (helpful!). But still, having called 4 times now, the 5th time she called the EPU for me, but they aren't taking in cases unless there is pain too (good old CV). So I'm having to wait for my 12 week scan before I know anything.

It is tough not knowing and so hard to tell yourself not to worry, but I am choosing to trust the experts at this time as there's not much else I can do! Hoping the next 2 weeks goes quickly...
