Anyone any experience with newborn hip problems? 4 week old had ultrasound today and was told he had a shallow joint and have been put forward for appt. with consultant and she mentioned the possibility of double nappy, or harness but couldn’t tell me much more. Just I wondered if anyone had any experience of what possibly lies ahead? Thanks

Newborn hip problems - anyone experienced?
Hi, my daughter had hip scans at 8 days, 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks because they were worried about her hips when she was examined at 1 day old.
luckily she was fine at every ultrasound but i'm glad they monitored her so closely. I think they are really cautious about stuff like this so please don't worry until you know more.
The consultant we saw was really keen on using reusable nappies because they make baby 'frog legged' which is really good for their hip development. If you don't want to use reusables you can still use a disposable and just put a reusable on top (something like this works well: thenappylady.co.uk/shaped-s... )
You can also double up disposables but we didnt do this so im not sure if this works as well.
I know that if there is an issue then they may suggest a brace/harness to help. I dont have experience of this myself but when my sister was a baby (35 yrs ago!) she had to wear one for a few months and my mum said while it was obviously upsetting and worrying it really wasnt that bad. And its far better than hip problems later in life or needing an operation etc as the harness doesnt hurt or feel uncomfotrable for them.
I think its an issue that can run in families but also my baby was breech until 37 weeks which I think can affect hip development.
Hope that helps - just ask if you have any questions. I know it must be stressful but it's good they are looking into it xxx
