4 month old painful gas

My LO has just turned 4 months but over the last few weeks she has stopped sleeping. I thought at first it was just the 4 month sleep regression but I now think its trapped wind. She basically cries or grumbles until she gets a fart out if she can't I need to pick her up and help or comfort nurses her. She wakes ever hour in pain. Shes always been a bit windy and had some reflux but nothing like this. She is totally fine during the day.

Any ideas why this would suddenly get worse at 4 months and why only at night. She is breastfed but I don't think I've changed my diet.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, sounds like it could be a possible milk/dairy allergy, I would go to the doctors and ask for a test to be done at the hospital.

I did wonder about a milk intolerance but its seems to have been extreme symptoms come on every suddenly. But it wont hurt to take her to the doctors for a test anyway.

Thanks for your reply.

My daughter was alright for the first month or so then just cried and scrunched her legs up, Colic can also be a common cause although there is not much in terms of curing it, just lots of winding and rocking did help. She didn't get diagnosed until nearly 4months old so it was a long and unpleasant experience as a first time mum, as soon as we found out and made some changes she was fine. She has outgrown it nearly, intolerance they usually grow out of, allergies are long lasting x hope you get somewhere with the doctor's

Oh you poor love, I feel your pain, this is EXACTLY what we went through. In fact I posted on here about it when I was at my wit's end, waking every 45 minutes overnight ☹️ Looking back now, as potentially unhelpful as it is for you for me to say, it genuinely was just a phase that he grew out of without any intervention/medication. I didn't change anything specific and he just grew out of it. Moving his last feed of the day away from bedtime definitely helped. So we feed first (BF) then book, bath, massage, pyjamas, bed. He did have to be rocked to sleep when he was still little but now he falls asleep in his cot on his own most of the time (he is nearly one though now). I genuinely felt like there was nothing more I can do to help him and it was heartbreaking, so I can totally understand how horrible it is for you at the moment. People suggested cow's milk allergy and things I was eating, but it definitely wasn't any of that because I'd changed nothing and he'd tried formula and was ok with it. So, long and unhelpful story short, it's likely to just be another wonderful phase that she'll grow out of. We obvs tried gripe water and tummy massage (there's a good one on YouTube from infacol) and I think those things helped a little bit, but just one day he wasn't doing it as much, and soon he wasn't doing it at all.

It's so horrible and I'm so sorry I haven't been able to come up with a quick fix. Just don't panic when people suggest that you should change your baby's diet or your diet, or frighten you with allergies and things like that, as my experience it was just a phase (obviously you know your baby best I'm not saying it's not an allergy, just if there's no other symptoms and it's come on without any changes to diet etc it seems unlikely, in my opinion) Good luck, I really hope it passed soon (I'm desperately trying to think when my boy got better but it's all such a blur!!! but I would have thought it was no longer than 4 weeks in the really bad stage. I don't know if that's good news or not!!) Good luck xxx

It's good to know someone else has had this a lived to tell the tale.

I did think about a milk intolerance as I haven't changed my diet I wasnt sure, but it's not going to hurt to have her tested and cut out milk for a bit. But i do hope it's just a phase.

I'll have a look at the tummy massage and your post.

Thank for your help.
