Possible Inducement - advice on the process before and after please!

Good Morning,

I am currently 36+4 days pregnant and I have had 2 scans in the last two weeks to confirm the size of my baby. i have also done a GTT test which came back negative.

He is currently, as of yesterday, in the 95th percentile and is estimated to currently way 7.7lb - i have been advised that he is currently classed as "Macrosomic" and so possible inducement will need to take place. From other posts i have noticed that the birth weight is more often than not quite off, and so i have really taken this with a pinch of salt but regardless - there is a possible inducement on the way according to the sonographer!

What i was hoping to get some advice on was this - can any of the lovely ladies on this forum advise on their own inducement or perhaps ones they know of in terms of at what point/when they let should let me know if its going to go ahead, how much time they give you beforehand and at around what week/mark do they normally do this?

i have an appointment booked in with the Obstetrician on Friday but wasnt told why - i assume this might be the time but as its my first baby i havent a clue how this will now progress!

thank you in advance xx

I was induced at 38 weeks but it failed and I ended up having a c section. You're basically fitted with a pessary containing a hormone to start labour, with the hope it'll soften and open the cervix enough for your water to be broken (or they could go on their own) and your contractions will start. They will leave the pessary for 24 hours during which time they will hook you up to a monitor every few hours that checks if you're contracting and the baby's heart beat. After 24 hours they will feel to see if your cervix has started to open, if not they will leave it another 8 hours. If nothing has happened after 32 hours they will put in a new pessary and wait another 24 hours, if nothing happens then they may fit you with an iv with oxytocin which essentially speeds labour up or they will offer a c section. My LG heart rate became raised which is why I ended up with an emergency caesarean which is not scary at all. Best wishes to you xx

Hi lovely. I was induced at 36+3 as my waters broke (in the Beefeater!! 😂) And there were no other signs of labour. This was in March and it was baby number 1.

They put me on the drip at about 2.30am, I was sleeping on and off (between checks) and felt absolutely fine. Around 7am some really mild contractions started and they very gradually got stronger. I was 2cm diallated at 10am and was told to expect about half a cm per hour. Well, my beautiful boy was born an hour and 43 minutes later at 11.43am 👍😊

The induction was totally problem free, I did it with just gas and air, sadly had to wave goodbye to my water birth as me and the baby had to be monitored throughout, but that really isn't a problem is it as long as your baby gets what's best for them, which he did. The staff are incredible.

You're totally right re predicted/actual birth weights. I've heard predictions being as much as 2 pounds off sometimes! Good luck with it all, you're in totally safe hands and you'll be meeting your baby before you know it!!! Xxxx

Mine was booked in at my 36 week appointment. It didn’t happen fast for me- started the first pessary at 11am Saturday and didn’t have her until 7:39pm Monday. So be prepared for a possible longer hospital stay. Good luck hun.

I was induced at 41 weeks +, i didn't had any labour symptomes , my baby was quite big 9 pounds. After they administer propolis at 2pm my labor start at middle night, and my water broke at 4am I was fully dilated they took me to delivery room and my baby came at 7am. Two of my friends who had babies with labour before and then on their second baby were induced they said it was more painful. Ask for gas and air and eat dates and fig so you can have a stool before birth it help me a lot. As well I was feeling great when contraction start (yes you will know) and I was sitting on loo (LOL) . Good luck and don"t worry once you hold your baby you will forget any pain you will remember only how it was.
