Thrush with black tongue in baby??? Anyone come across this before. If so, please help

My son who is 7 weeks old has had difficulties feeding almost from birth. Won’t feed more than 5-10 mins max and starts crying like he’s in pain. We have persisted with breast feeding and seen the GP/health visitor/feeding support team/midwife etc... we have constantly complained about our son crying for hours on end each day (worse evenings/night). No real help or solution offered and just told things will get better!

Last night, we noticed by chance that his tongue was white with what appeared like black spots/patches on top of the white. Went to out of hours doctor and told it was thrush! No swab was taken.

Prescribed nystatin 1ml for baby 4x/day (after feed) and daktarin gel for Mum to use on nipple (after feed).

Just wondering if anybody has come across anything similar with ‘black patches/spots’ on white tongue and how it was treated and how we know if infection had spread in body etc or not.

Out of hours doctor said we don’t need to see our own GP until 1 weeks time when we go for our 8 week routine GP check up.

Just worried as to whether it is thrush or not and if so, why the black on tongue and not just white as google images seem to show?

Hi sorry to hear you haven't had much help. Keep pushing and, tell them you don't, appreciate being fobbed off.

Regards the thrush my daughter had this but it did start off with white spots and the Dr said it's normal after a few days it went to black I went back and another Dr said thrush and that it should have been picked up when it was just white spots. Anyway was prescribed medicines and for her toungue and Me and it went. Just remember if your using dummies (I didn't) to keep them clean and strelilized also bottle teats. It should clear up soon. Can't remember what they prescribed it was nearly 5 year ago good luck

That is the correct treatment for the thrush. Thrush is pretty common in babies, wouldn't normally swab it. In general if an infection spreads (Thrush rarely spreads) to the rest of the body you would be very ill and not acting normally at all (your baby's normal).

The baby crying loads esp. In the evening tho sounds like colic or possibly reflux, esp since the thrush started much later.
