Metformin

Hi I have been put on metformin to help me ovulate. I have recently taken a pregnancy test and this said I am positive - however before I get too excited I was wondering if metformin can give you a false reading at all. Any advise is much appreciated. Thanks

Hi clare1986,

I'm sorry I cant offer you any advice about taking/ or the symptoms of taking Metformin as Ive never taken it but in usual cases of taking pregnancy tests it's almost impossible to get a false positive reading as the test has measured the HGC pregnancy hormone in your urine stream. Depending on the gestation of your pregnancy this HGC hormone can be either low or high.

If it helps you to feel more at ease try doing/taking another test tomorrow morning & see the result.

xx

Check the leaflet that comes with your medication or call NHS Direct just to be sure, but from what I can see it shouldn't interfere with test results. If you have a positive, you're pregnant.

Hi, the pee stick measures HCG levels. The only thing I know of that can give a false positive is usually found in older ladies who may have Ovarian issues. Do another test - sounds positive to me!! If in doubt afterwards see your GP asap. They can arrange for your bloods to be taken every day over a course of a few days (I went in at 8.30am for 3 mornings) and then tell you for sure if the HCG levels have risen every day - ie you're pregnant. If this still doesn't clarify they may send you to Early Pregnancy Clinic at your maternity hospital for a scan once you're around 6 wks - if they see a baked bean on a stick with a heartbeat then you've defo got a baby in the oven :) Everything crossed for you.

No you're right it is HCG . Stands for human chorionic gonadotropin.

Well, that doesn't happen very often, I can tell you x

I don't know much about metformin, but nhs site says if you are taking certain medicines it can affect results, but the information for the medicine should say if it does. This might help: nhs.uk/chq/pages/2308.aspx?...

I know a friend who is having IVF has been told not to do a home test as it could produce false negative, but the drugs involved there are obviously different to yours.

Hope that helps, and fingers crossed for you.

Morning all. Thank you all so much for your comments. I have done another test this morning and it is showing positive again :-) I hope by now that any metformin is out of my system as I last took a tablet on Wednesday just in case it does interfere with the results at all . going to book am appt at the doctors to get my blood taken just to double check again - fingers crossed X

Hi Clare,

If the pregnancy tests were positive both times then its definitely positive!! I too were placed on Metformin for 4 months and conceived a beautiful baby boy last year - nearly 1 in 5 days!! I hope seeing the doctor and getting a blood test will confirm the results you are looking for. All the best :)
