Below 10.5 is the 'treatment line' for iron supplementation...

Mine was 5.5 post delivery - felt terrible!!!

But still will this iron level be enough for growing baby during last 11 week?

Which iron tablets are you taking? Solgar gentle iron???

It is not recommended to take iron supplements unsupervised as excessive iron levels can increase your risk for gestational diabetes.

The UK guidelines state that anaemia is defined by haemoglobin <11g/dl in first trimester, <10.5g/dl in second and third trimesters and <10g/dl in postpartum period. Therefore as Dr Fluffy said 10.8 is still within the normal range.

If you fall in the normal range (which you do) then I think you just need to trust your healthcare team and relax that everything's okay.

Mine was really low post delivery too. They thought it was 7.6 and gave me transfusion after which it 'increased' to 6.3!! Another transfusion later it was 7.6 and i was discharged. Only to be readmitted a day later as was nearly passing out, and given another transfusion and finally discharged with it at 9.6 :-/

I feel sometimes dizzy. Tired and feeling sleepy..

Dizzy tired and feeling sleepy might not be your iron levels. I've been on iron tablets from early on as had anaemia, but last midwife app my iron levels were too good so had to reduce what was taking. They REALLY don't want you taking iron unsupervised because can cause other problems. Still dizzy, tired and what not. Is because my blood pressure is down very low so I'm being kept a super close eye on - but doctor did say can be quite normal in third trimester for blood pressure to drop a bit and it would make you feel dizzy and sleepy. If its still in good normal range for you they might not have said it was slightly lower so ask next time you are in doctors/midwifes. they always take it so should have a record of what's normal for you and be able to see if fallen. Shouldn't need treated but will make you not feel so good x

I feel really bad now. If I go Gp he wont give me supplement right????

I'm on ferrous fumarate which is one of two types doctor would prescribe IF you needed it (at least that's what doctor said to me and not sure if that a brand or type of iron tablet). Not sure what the other type is, but no the doctor won't just give you it for asking. They'd run more bloods and then decide (usually know results by next day), but unless you really need them they won't give them as they can cause more problems with constipation etc. Sounds like you may be making yourself feel worse by over stressing. But if you are feeling really bad, especially with dizziness call your gp and get seen today! If you feint and have a fall you could hurt the baby so get checked. Also what have you eaten today? I know sounds really silly but if you've not been feeling good and skipped something that wouldn't have bothered you before, could make you feel off. They'll run a lot more tests and may even send you to hospital just to get checked. Most likely will be something minor but an afternoon getting checked out is worth the rest of your pregnancy having your mind at peace. Do not fixate on iron though, let them do their job, check you over and find the root of it. Might be iron, but might be something else so just let them check everything. If you have trouble with the receptionist at your gp ask for someone to come out, tell them its urgent or ring midwife triage. Yes you'll be making a fuss, but that's what pregnant women are meant to do x

10.8 is fine, in the normal level.

Mine is considered low at 10.4 (28weeks) but only just below the cut off. Technically I could get iron tablets from GP but didn't want to get the horrible constipation usually associated with them.

As I'm close to the cut off my midwife recommended Spartone supplement. Went straight to Tesco and now one sachet a day ;)

I've been feeling slightly tired but nothing major. Think the iron level has to be pretty low to give you the full on symptoms.

My iron has gone from 12.7 to 12.3 to 10.4, just for info.

Hope that's helps :) xXX

Ooooooo, forgot to say, I'm being retested at 35 weeks to see if it has improved xXx

Is there any private clinics that I can check without GP refer?

salmon_finland profile image
salmon_finland in reply tohols_13

Normal range is 10 or 10.5?

hols_13 profile image
hols_13 in reply tosalmon_finland

For 28 week blood test the cut off is 10.5. Therefore they won't treat unless your level is below this. They have taken into account the further natural reduction in iron levels as pregnancy continues. I think at 35 weeks the cut off is 10. xXx

I had test on 10 week was 13.7 now 28 week 10.8. Why yours 3 test?

hols_13 profile image
hols_13 in reply tosalmon_finland

I had one at my booking appointment at 10 weeks (12.7)

Then, due to my job as a research chemist, I had one at my company medical at 16 weeks (12.3)

Now, my 28 week routine blood test (10.4) xXx

So will my midwife also arrange me another test at 35? Do you think?

Spartone supplement without prescription. Can I also take it?

hols_13 profile image
hols_13 in reply tosalmon_finland

You can. You do not need a prescription for Spartone. I bought mine in my local Tesco.

Just make sure you follow the instructions and don't go over recommended dosage xXx

Mine was 9.4 at 28 week bloods I was told it has to be nearer 35. I have ferrous sulphate now and the MW said if my iron levels do not sort themselves out i will require a blood transfusion after baby is born.
