impossible decision to make

I’m a 41 yr. Survivor of cervical cancer suffering from Radiation proctitis and a colon stricture. I have been told that a “tricky and risky” colostomy and proctectomy are my only options and that they are “elective” surgeries. I am almost 70 yrs old and fear that these surgeries will cause me to lose a level of independence and more complications. Research states there is a high percentage of co- morbidity and mortality in the surgery. I don’t know how to make such an impossible decision and live with the outcomes/implications. Have any of you found alternative ways to manage strictures and bleeding with major surgery? Thanks!

So sorry for your suffering. I’m 16 yrs post tx for cervical cancer. I have severe BAM and frequent small bowel obstructions. I too have avoided surgery due to high risk of complications. I manage with severe dietary restrictions. Fasting. Yoga and exercise. Difficult but doable. Takes extreme resolve and commitment.

I absolutely agree with accidentalcarnivore. My Consultant has advised against surgery as the damage to my bowel is so extensive and therefore the surgery would just be to dangerous. I too restrict my diet, try to walk a little every day and do intermittent fasting.

You are all so brave and resourceful! I cannot offer much advice as we all have to manage in our own ways. I now have the support of the Late effects clinic in Bristol and Zoe is really helpful. A listening ear often puts a different perspective on things and helps us move forward. I am 80 next birthday and would not dream of contemplating surgery. The complications are not worth thinking about! Thankfully I manage with diet and occasional resort to Loperamide and Buscopan in addition to a whole set of other medications!

Best wishes for you future plans

Jude

Hi, It's so difficult when the so called 'Experts' put the decision back on us. This shouldn't be the case at all. I have the same symptoms as you & have been told by my Consultant that a Colostomy is out of the question as the damage to the nerves in the Large Bowel is too extensive & I would actually end up worse off. My treatment, A Low Residue Diet ie. No Fibre whatsoever & Laxatives every Morning to avoid the risk of Impaction or more seriously Obstruction. Yes. I wear my 'Nappy' as I call it 24/7 but I know it's the only option I have. Good luck in making your decision.

thank you for your honest response and God bless you too. I have been so distressed about even trying to make an informed decision. It’s nice to know I am not alone in this journey.
