An interesting Covid story

While we are all rejoicing at the efficacy of Covid vaccines, an interesting story of a slightly different breakthrough has been reported in The Telegraph and other newspapers this morning.

It seems that a substance (EXO-CD24) has been trialling there which is a major treatment for Covid. It's been a very small clinical trial so far but has apparently had amazing results after it was given to 30 patients, 29 of whom have made quite dramatic recoveries and the 30th recovered but less quickly.

The treatment contains a protein CD24 which is delivered directly to the lungs in a gas, and it helps to rebalance the immune system, so it does not overreact to the virus!

It seems that this substance was originally developed to treat ovarian cancer.

It's such early days, but if further trials show this to be a safe and effective method of treatment, the news is huge and a major breakthrough.

Because no matter how successful vaccination is, it will not eradicate covid19 completely, and effective treatments that can improve outcomes and save lives are equally important.

It’s good they are still trailing things, but I’ve become more and more of the opinion that by the time someone enters hospital the damage is already done. At home you’re just told to keep an eye on your oxygen levels while you have symptoms yet a year later there is no formal treatment rolled out to those at home with treatments that can treat Covid while it’s getting settled.

Going into hospital you’re treating the effects of Covid not Covid itself. I’m sure earlier treatment intervention would help

You are quite right moonerman that even this substance is targeting the affected organs (lungs) and not the covid19 virus, which is addressed through vaccination. It's unlikely that this could be rolled out to use at home, unless it could eventually be given in a similar fashion to, say, an asthma inhaler or that further trials reveal it does not have to be targeted to the lungs directly! However, if it works in the three to five days suggested, it could cut hospital stays and critical care exponentially.

Yes, we need to champion outcomes to these kinds of trials when we can definitely, I just feel that there could be other treatments given to those positive cases in the form of a Covid Emergency Pack. Steroids, Vit D boost, I dunno I’m not a Doctor ha ha just feel monitor your oxygen levels doesn’t cut it anymore a year down the road.

And who knows what else will come from Covid research? If this treatment is aimed at controlling the immune systems response perhaps, in time, there will be new treatments for auto immune diseases. I think we should have an annual “National Health Day” as a thank you to all health workers, including the hard working research workers and a huge national fundraising day for medical research.

Absolutely 06hollyberry. I think we've actually done really well to learn so much about this virus in the space of a year, so there's every hope that there will be more and more treatments which will lessen the impact of the disease!What a brilliant idea to have a Health Workers' Day. We honour our armed forces that way, and now we see first hand the strength and dedication our health workers have shown too. It would do us good to think about all they do on an annual basis.

I wouldn't want to diminish the work that's gone into all the vaccine research, but it is true that, just as with bad cases of flu, we are still going to have to help those who manage to catch covid19. I'm pretty sure that over time we will find more and more ways in which to do that.

Oh I totally agree, the work that's gone into making the vaccines is enormous and those that have worked so tirelessly need to be praised as it's incredible what they've achieved.

We are going to have to help those that catch it and this is amazing.

We are going to learn more and more as time goes on.

Thanks I've sent it to mam's watsap it will make her even more positive than she was yesterday 😁have a nice day were hoping to get fish from farmfoods if it's empty then be battering our own for tea so we're both exited about that lol can't believe it's a week since I told you about the Morrisons take away fish have a nice day night I must get up got cramp in my leg had 2 meals in bed pixies asleep next to me he be exited if fish for his tea 😸xx

It really sounds as if it's going to be Pixie's day with some lovely fish for dinner! It'll be good if that reported treatment keeps your mum feeling more positive! Are you having chips with your fish?

Hi yes we will probably have frozen oven ones cooked in microwave the glad fry in bit cold pressed rapseed oil as it doesn't saturate at high temperatures so less saturated fat mam's veins are very narrow we soak oil up after microwave that's on from factory too , and sometimes make own cook raw potati sliced in microwave until soft then fry in frying pan with only oil to cover have the chip turn when bronzed I do roasts this way too for quickness just shaped different we got frozen must peas, I do like easy cooking these days pixies just here now jealous of phone he woke up when I got up I'll send picture of our tea xx

Oh lovely I got one for mad bunny with grey cat on lol that black ones like my jet I had, were hoping to get fish from farmfoods I'm just getting dressed pixies waiting patiently did you sleep ok I slept from 8.3o till midnight then more later xx

Yes it's good shop, yes milky drink helps me keeping off here too lol if I get head down when I'm tired I'll usually sleep if I stay awake I get a 2nd burst but I'm not usually in pain unless my head is playing up apart from lately my bruised ribs I'm going to get a sponge down I made it for the swing a comfy seat coverred it I had to sleep on it when I first bruised my ribs in summer the bed has lumps in 🤯enjoy rest of your day another day nearly gone 🤗😸🌹xxx

I hadn’t heard of this dance but thank you for sharing isn’t it great,that’ll be right up there with my daily Zumba gold regime lol I’m trying so hard to improve my physical and mental health so anything that helps is great by me.

I will have a look at my PM in a minute.Have you got snow today? It's supposed to be bad here tomorrow!! I'm useless once it gets slushy or icy because I always end up on my bum!!! Hi Jerry, I'm sure there must be some merit in sanitising the area around your nose and mouth too. And surely a spray or inhaler might be developed in future. There's evidence emerging that frequent use of mouthwash helps too. While it would be silly to rely on that I think, it can't possibly do any harm to try it.

Glad you feel good. Not too good tbh, in a lot of pain right now but I will try and keep smiling which is hard at times. Like I've said many times, there is no point in being miserable because it won't change anything and would probably make me feel worse emotionally. Thank you for asking
