I was told about three years or so ago (after a colonoscopy) that I have it.
Hi, Oscar091, I had a terrible time with diverticulitis a year ago. The abdominal pain was so intense that my doc thought it might be the appendix and ordered a CAT scan which revealed the problem. I was put on a liquid diet, followed by a very bland diet for several weeks. This site may give you more information:
My husband, now passed away, suffered greatly with diverticulitis. After various tests he was diagnosed with this as well as irritable bowel syndrome. He knew every available toilet in every place we visited as he would regularly have symptoms and need a toilet. He was given lots of conflicting advice from the doctors he saw regarding diet.. Such as eating plenty of roughage and was prescribed granules to sprinkle over his food. In fact he eventually found these made his particular condition worse and he suffered greatly with diarrhoea, using the toilet up to 5 times daily.
After researching this condition it appears to me now that it varies with each person. Some people have spells of diarrhoea then become constipated. Its clear that when those little sacs become infected the pain is severe and antibiotics are needed to clear up the infection. I would suggest you make a note of what you eat to see what food make your condition worse. It really can be unpleasant and it did impact on my husband's life as he became less keen to go out in case he couldn't access a toilet easily.
I sincerely hope you get to grips with your condition and find ways of making your day to day life manageable.
Hi, I’ve had this for years, a family genetic unfortunately. I must admit I quite like this lockdown as I’m always close to my toilet. It does make days out a problem though and I really can’t decide what foods are best, it seems entirely random. Hope you can get it sorted out, good luck.
I don't Oscar091,
I don't but one of my sisters does, and she is currently awaiting a procedure to help her, after a long period of managing her disease. I know it's a surgical procedure but certainly not as serious a procedure as the colectomy which is occasionally performed for the most serious of diverticulitis cases. She says it is a day surgery procedure but couldn't give me its name.
Lots of people manage their diverticulitis with very little intervention.
What I would mention with my sister is that she has, lifelong, been a devotee of a healthy lifestyle. As such, she doesn't fit any of the descriptions of the sort of person who would get this, so, much as it's often levelled as being a disease of poor lifestyle choices, this absolutely isn't always the case.
But anyway, in your case, you may hopefully be able to navigate your way through life without its becoming too much of a problem to you, but it might help to do some reading up about it, in order to learn the best way to do this.
This is a link to the NHS website for diverticulitis and there is plenty to explore otherwise on the internet, but please be careful to use trusted , as there is lots of misinformation out there too.
Yes - I had a polypectomy a year or two ago.
Before that... I had discomfort in my sigmoid (between the colon and rectum) did often need a toilet at short notice.
Hi!
I have diverticula disease. It’s diverticulitis when you have an infection. The pockets that grow are called diverticula.
I had my sigmoid colon removed because of it.
It’s very painful when you have a flare up. It’s usually treated with antibiotics. In severe cases they can remove part of the colon. But that’s only in the extreme cases.
