My husband always makes rosehip syrup for the winter months which gives him great satisfaction. He counts and picks 400 at a time!! These make 3 1lb jars. At a dessertspoon a day on his porridge a jar lasts one month. So he picks 800 in total which lasts over the winter till spring. I tend not to have it as laden with sugar. But.. there is more vit C in one rosehip than an orange. He uses the Womans Hour Wartime Recipe on line which reminds us of our childhood (he's 80) and has less sugar than modern chefs' recipes. I take a vit C supplement but he likes the real deal! I could never make it as so time consuming, it takes nearly all day. Just topping the rosehips takes for ever and I'm not allowed to help thankfully. Even when we stay in the mountains in Spain most Octobers (not this year), he's out picking and making it. We have to take the empty jars over with us! He reckons it builds immunity over the winter. However, he did have a bad chest cold in January caught from a friend which I didn't get.. So I dispute that one!! But it keeps him very happy to know he's made it. Does anyone else make it?

They look lovely diana and so does the rosehip syrup. π
Hi diana1998
I don't make rosehip syrup, but I really enjoyed hearing about the fact your husband does, it was really interesting. I also really like your hand-painted seasonal jugs, they are beautiful.
Zest
The hand painted jugs are so pretty and they are lovely and bright. Rosehip syrup sounds good. ππΈ
I've never tried to make my own rosehip syrup diana1998, but as a child who had a half-country upbringing, shortly after the end of WW2, we often foraged for these in the hedgerows, when out blackberrying and delivered them to grandma for processing. During the war all kids were entreated to collect them of course, for making into syrup, including my own older sisters.
In the early days of the NHS, that strange concentrated orange juice started to be provided for free for the under fives, and the rose hip tradition died out for us.
But that looks absolutely amazing, and rose hips really are a great source of vitamin C! πππ
I remember the NHS orange juice. Just the job
Such a beautiful photo. I love the jugs.
The rosehip syrup reminds me of my childhood. Mum always used to give us a spoonful every day.Maybe that's why I have such a sweet tooth nowπ
It gave us kids vit C after the war in rationingπ
I was born late 50s post rationing but we still had it well into the 60s. I also remember the codliver oil and malt extract. Yukπ
Better than Cod Liver Oil on its own, Bleargh! I quite liked Virol, and I got Rose hip syrup and national Orange juice.
Cheers, midori
True although still not nice. I had the orange juice but don't remember Virol.
Thanks πΉ
I think thatβs lovely that your husband makes that. Good for him. Iβve never tried it but Iβm very impressed!
Never heard of anyone else making it these days. It's his challenge and delicious on porridge, yoghurt, icecream etc... But naughty because of the sugar... Like homemade jams!
