Is This Reduction Too Drastic?

Just diagnosed for 3rd Time and back on Pred. On 15mg at moment. When I have been on 15mg for 9 days Dr wants me to reduce to 14mg for 1 week and there after by 1mg a week .

I am a lot better, but Pain is still present, even though much reduced. Is it wise to reduce while Pain is still there?

Thankyou, Jenny

IMHO - far too soon to reduce and 1mg a week is ridiculous!!! Why are they in such a HURRY???

Hi Ladies, thank you for your replies to my Post. Feeling very low about getting Pmr for the 3rd time. I don't think it is getting Pmr again making me feel low, but the thought of having to face this ridiculous Fiasco again where the left Hand doesn't know what the right Hand is doing regarding reducing the Pred. No two Dr's share the same opinion, do they?Jenny

Hi, Attic.

If this is your 3rd bout of PMR - and you attempted similar tapers previously, I think you have answered your own question.

Perhaps from a more optimistic perspective, you might have only had PMR once, but you tapered off the prednisolone too quickly before it had burned itself out.

The usual mantra here is to only taper slowly, and no faster than your PMR will allow. So, I hope your GP will support that for you, and you can get free of it this time. (Kind regards, Pete.)

Looking at previous posts, Attic’s first bout started 10 years ago and lasted for 6 years. Which is probably quite usual.

Would agree that second bout which I think restarted 2 years after first went into remission and this latest occurrence are one and the same… with too fast a taper second time around…and only a few months before it raised its head again.

It’s not unusual to get PMR more than once -so with a 2 year gap would say that’s what occurred… so not once, but twice.

Whatever, it’s bad luck. . 🙈

Sorry - yes, after drilling back into the earliest posts, I see Attic's PMR started around 10 years ago.

That’s why we ask people to keep profile updated so we don’t have to do that!😊

Totally agree with PMRpro - and one week at each dose is no good for PMR/GCA… think your doctor is confusing treatment with other acute illnesses where it might be okay to reduce in that manner.

Reduce every month, yes, every week no! It can take well over 2 weeks for you to be sure that current dose is enough before you reduce, even 3 weeks may be pushing it….

Let's just hope this particular GP never gets PMR himself. But there again ..............

Do have to wonder sometimes where these doctors come from. Totally agree with PMRpro and DL and even 1mg/month is likely to be too quick after the first two or three reductions.

I would say no, as my Rhumatologist is tapering me down by 1mg every 8 weeks, as my pain is still very much there. All the best

This is interesting as I have been tapering 0.5-1mg every 10 days, currently on 4.5mg but feeling less well. Think I'll stop tapering for while. There is a wealth of information in these pages 🙂
