Nourovirus
I have a pretty nasty virus too.I didn't put it up.I just drink fluids and rest.My cough is rough.Hope u get better soon!!
Hi, I've just recovered from COVID then a nasty secondary chest infection I was prescribed Doxycycline...like you I weathered the storm and was determined not to up my steroids....You are just not sure if you are doing the right thing?
But I felt so ill anyway didn't make much of a difference....
The purpose of upping the pred when ill is to replace the spike of cortisol that would normally be produced to help your body fight off the infection. It is mainly required if you are ill enough to be confined to bed or be put on antibiotics. Nothing really to do with making you feel better - it is to ward off an adrenal insufficiency problem so you "weather the storm" better and more safely.
I know you are right.I just feel so fed up and down with the whole thing...
My Dr didn't even bother to see me when he questioned my last blood results....he just sent my results to a hematologist...they rang me and told me they didn't think anything was wrong just the steroids had now caused leukocytosis and neutrophils...
Hence me not upping the steroids...
Stupid maybe.
I caught C.Diff when my husband was in hospital, then 5 days later caught my first bout of Covid. I was confined to bed for 5 days, tested positive for 15 days, & now have Long Covid. I spoke to my Dr to try & get help…he advised me to increase steroids for two weeks & then drop straight back down. I was determined not to increase steroids, as had fought down twice from 5mg to 2mg, but a short increase & immediate drop back seemed sensible, especially as my husband would be home after pneumonia quite soon. The drop back down worked perfectly for me. As PMR Pro says, it’s not to do with making you feel better, but I’d had nasty adrenal insufficiency problems the first time I tapered, & couldn’t afford for my health to get any worse!
Pixix, I don't know if you saw my post the other day about long covid? I recently read that nicotine patches can help to alleviate the symptoms of long covid. So I posted up a link to an article published by the American National Institute of Health (NIH) which summarised the effects the nicotine patches have on the covid symptoms. Below are links to that article, plus links to a couple of others I came across as well.

And this one, which of the articles I've read so far, is the most comprehensive one regarding the physical and practical issues involved with the use of nicotine patches.

P.S. I read many of the comments under the article, and they were even more informative than the actual article was, so I recommend anyone who reads this last article to set aside some time to read not only the article itself, but all of the 170 comments below it. They are very enlightening!
Thanks for putting it onhere again for me…I did respond a lot in the post (think it was Tiggyxx post?) and to your comment, I think. I haven’t had time to read it yet, still waiting for a date for Dr’s appointment, waited 3 months, &, sadly, have more acute problems needing attention. But when I get the chance to talk LongCovid I will reward it! S x
