never ask a silly question

so I recently posted a question asking you all whether I should up my pred (sick day rules) for a bad bladder infection, got helpful replies. Then today I fell off the front porch, foot twisted when I wasn’t paying attention, spent all afternoon at urgent care, bad sprain. Without re-asking, I came home and took extra pred because now I’m pretty sure sick day rules are warranted. 😬. And my blankety blank foot hurts (sick day cussing).

Oh you poor thing , sprains are so much more painful than breaks and the shock will be pretty bad, I hope PMR is shocked into submission, it sometimes is, but I am sure sick day rules apply and you took the right action.I went to Australia one time, climbed a small mountain, went white water rafting, surfed, came home, to the uk, tripped over my suitcase and broke my shoulder - the tendon and muscle wrench was by far the worst pain. No warning at all. Have a good rest and heal soon. X

Thank you so much! To add insult to injury, my sister said, “falls are so hard at our age!” Ouch! I’m just hoping and praying that my mushy muscles don’t get mushier while I’m laid up…cuz there’s no way I’ll be walking for awhile. At least not very far. Can’t get to the bathroom without hubby’s help, got big strappy brace for my ankle, just hope it gets better in next couple days.

Is it one of those big ski boot things? When the initial injury is less acute, you might be able to get about with crutches. For now though just submit to being waited on and do nice relaxing things to distract yourself eg books, magazines, movies, radio TV, zoom calls etc. In fact, my normal life. 💐

No, I couldn’t handle the ski boot, too heavy for my poor pmr body. Couldn’t do crutches either. Just too much to navigate. Ended up with some kind of ankle support strapping thing with a dial for fit. Need phd to figure it out. Begged for just elastic brace, doc refused

I would be the same. I can tell that your adrenaline is all over the place. You are trying to solve everything now. You need to rest and get over this, solving the problems it presents one at a time Twopies. And breathe! Talk to you tomorrow. It’s been a long day. Are you in the US?

Sympathies to Twopies. Was intrigued by your adrenaline comment. I solve the world's problems (at least it seems like that in the small hours!) Never thought of adrenaline (duh) but always happens when trying to reduce. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. x

Ow! That sounds painful – my sympathies.

Arnica cream or ointment rubbed onto the skin over a strain/sprain can sometimes be helpful to assist healing. Don't use Arnica though if the skin is broken. Hope you heal soon!

Ouch, poor you, plenty of TLC required ….🌸

Ouch - ankles are the most inconvenient place to be sore - but at least I have no trouble with crutches which keeps me fairly mobile. Get well soon.

I’d say ‘suck and see’, if you start to get the signals of feeling unwell then follow SDRs. Just my reasoning so don’t take it as medical fact.

Ouch! We do seem to need our ankles! My husband broke his 2 weeks ago and had 2 screws installed this past week. We got a used knee scooter and it is the best thing! He uses crutches for fine maneuvering and the scooter for hallways and longer distances. He’s like a kid on his bike again!

Good for him! Unless he gets a speeding ticket!

I worry a bit that our steroids blunt some of the pain of an accidental injury. My pony and I had a close encounter in a doorframe and I found ten days later that I had two cracked ribs and an epigastric hernia that had bulged out. I carried on with the same dose (7.5mg) and took paracetamol.I’m booked in to have the hernia repaired next week and wondering about increasing the dose but such things play havoc with the tapering and I’m at that tricky point entering the “I’ll I won’t I” adrenal response .

Oh dear! My pain wasn’t blunted, felt like my whole body was in shock. I’m also on abx for a bad bladder infection, so I’m thinking the two onslaughts at the same time are just too much. I went up only 1 mg, figured I needed a little help. Won’t stay at increase very long, didn’t want to go up 5 mg for sdr as my body hates pred. The abx do a number on me too. Your encounter sounds nasty, never heard of such a thing. Hope you and pony are both on the mend soon! (You didn’t say your pony was injured, I’m just sending him/her best wishes as well).

Thankyou for your kind wishes. The pony was unhurt, I was distracted, it was an unfortunate accident but I went on to make 300 bales of hay with no thought for my pain. Pred has suited me and allowed me to continue my active life although I struggle to get below 7.5mg. Incidentally ten days ago I also had a nasty UTI which came on very fast but responded to timepthoprim.

I hope you are soon recovered from your recent horrors and back on track. Take care, Chrissie
