Hi tore a shoulder muscle playing with the dog question pre PMR followed RICE with the addition of either an Ibuprofen patch or Diclafenac patch on this type of injury would it be OK to use one now currently on 8mg Pred thanks in advance

I know that both diclofenac and ibuprofen can adversely react with prednisolone (gastrointestinal effects) and imagine that patches would do the same to some degree. You will see other more comprehensive replies to your question but you can check with your pharmacist who will advise.

I assume you mean the medicated patches rather than heat patches? It is claimed they act locally so are much safer than taking tablets, however, using them on large areas or for a long time could be less safe alongside pred. Do you also take a PPI such as omeprazple for "stomach protection"?

Too much use of NSAIDs in the 48 hours after an injury isn't advised - inflammation isn't always bad and suppressing inflammation CAN slow the healing process.

Hi thanks for your reply very helpful yes I mean the medicated patches and yes I take a PPI normally use a patch for 24hrs then go back to normal RICE procedure

Personally I would stick with paracetamol as safer then see a physio for specific advice. Does a hot shower improve it ? If it's tricky sleeping there's some good support side or back sleeping pillows about.

Support bed pillow examples for tricky shoulder or neck sleeping. One has 4 wings at side.

Apologies for the tardy reply many thanks for the info on pillows and your thoughts re medicated patches as yet I haven’t used any and the shoulder is responding to RICE treatment so all is going in the right direction
