Shingles Vax while on 8mg prednisone?

Hello!

Can you tell me what or if you had any reactions to getting the Shingles Vaccine? I want to get it before I end up with shingles, but I'm also scared of side effects from it. Would love to hear your experience. Thanks!

Hi, just had my second jab today ( second of two) as required. I had my first one 5 months ago as the Practice Nurse decided to leave a length of time between them due to being on Steroids. She did look it up on her computer first. No problems at all just a sore arm, as others have previously mentioned. I really don’t want to get a severe shingles outbreak, so vaccination the way to go .

I don't recall my dosage at the time I received it but since it is a 'dead' vaccine, you should be fine. About 9 months after Dx with GCA I got the shingles...right side of face, nose,.....it was pretty rough. So..run, don't walk ....and protect yourself. I, personally, didn't have any reaction. I forget the spacing between shots in the States.💞

So you got shingles AFTER you got the vaccine?

NO NO NO.......so sorry. I was DX in 2019, shingles spring of 2020! I don't think I'd heard of the vaccine...but got the two step vaccine in 2021! The vaccine rules!!!💞

I had no reaction to the first one and a very mild reaction to the second one. Just felt a bit achey for a day or so. I remember my father being extremely ill with shingles and was keen to avoid that.

Run don’t walk to get the vaccine! Currently 2nd week in of shingles and it’s next level. Being autoimmune adds another layer of possible complications and the nerve pain is unbearable. I was booked in to get the first one on 23rd but decided not to at the last minute because I was having my Prolia needle that day and didn’t want to be extra achy. Seems it was too late then anyway. You don’t want shingles. Trust me.

I should add that I was put on 50mg pred ( as well as the antivirals);from the onset of shingles to dampen down the inflammation so I am guessing that it’s ok to be taking it when you have the vaccine.

I couldn't agree more (see my reply to pottery lady) I got the antivirals as soon as I realised what I was dealing with. The actual shingles wasn't too painful but it's been the aftermath I am finding hard to cope with. I became as stiff as a board and my left leg simply refused to come to the party! It's been a battle I could have done without....... I wasn't offered the 50 mgs pred. Yes, I think Shingrix is perfectly safe when on prednisone.

P.S I am also on Prolia.

I have had both mine while on 11 - 10 mg of Pred. Nurse wanted 6 months apart. The only reaction was a very painful arm for a few days. Wasn’t so bad second time around. But I get a painful arm from all the other vaccines too. I’ve been told it’s a reaction to the carrier fluid the vaccine is in and a common side effect.

If you take paracetamol for 24-48 hours after vaccine - no arm issues.

Ahh. Wish I’d known. Thank you. I will next time round.

Advice from a practice nurse [wise lady] at least 20 years ago... have done it for every vaccination since.. 🙂

I am on 6 mg of pred and had shingles vaccine - two shots for Shingrax. Believe that is the normal non live vaccine given on NHS now. Nurse checked and need to be on 20 mg not to have I think.

I have had mine with no problems and the minimum 2 months between.

Hello Pottery Lady! I didn't have the shingles vaccine because I was told that I shouldn't as I was on prednisone. Then I got Shingles around 2 months ago! BUT, the new vaccine, Shingrix is apparently perfectly safe and I would have had it had I known. Please have it ASAP as having Shingles was awful. Afterwards I became ultra stiff and my left leg refused to work. I have tried acupuncture and physio the former made me worse! Please get the vaccine as soon as you can as it couldn't be worse than actually getting it and experiencing the aftermath.....

I had both boosters 6-9 months ago. 3 months apart. I can't remember which one made me feel distinctly off, but one did - for about 4 days, though - so, worth it! The other just gave me a sore arm for a day or two.

it been a while but I didn’t have any issues. Have you had any reactions, except for Covid- everyone has some type reaction to them, to other shots. 🤪,

no problems with other vaccines so I'm gonna get the shingles one in one week. Thank you so much!!!
