All very strange and scary - adrenals? Allergic reaction?

I posted a while ago about dizzy spells not unlike sea sickness. Last Monday was a very stressful day and Tuesday saw me so dizzy I could not move safely. Bad even lying down. I took 2 extra mg pred and took it very easy. By Wednesday could move about but with poor balance.

Friday night I woke after 1hrs sleep feeling really weird in a way that it very hard to describe. I had pains in various places including upper jaws but non of them hurt more when pressed. No temperature, no apparent racing pulse, but slightly nauseous. My head felt sort of out of it. After about an hour and a trip to the loo I walked about in the house a bit and went back to bed propped up on a lot of pillows. Saturday felt 'not right' but not ill and today - much better.

I'm pretty sure the vertigo type dizziness is down to adrenals being silly, but haven't a clue what was going on in the night time do.

Now in a quandary about vertigo type as you are supposed to report it to DVLA. Do I stay at same dose of pred to avert it, or what? I am still on 5 1/2 which was raised from 4 following the last do.

I should have added that there was a bit of churning inside - almost like nerve endings were firing off all over the place. Sounds very jumbled but struggle to describe it!

Try keeping a food diary. And have you tried self-administering the Epley manoeuvre or one of the alternatives?

Plus, get yourself some antihistamine tablets - Lidl or Aldi are probably the cheapest - and see if 1x daily makes a difference.

I have the antihistamine but didn't take one! Will look up self administered Epley

You have to buy the ticket AND use it!!!!

🤣🤣 I looked up the Epley but I couldn't identify one ear or the other! I also have neck issues, so the antihistamine seem the best bet

I can’t decide on the ear half the time but fine doing it for both sides works

Hi, PMRPro. I am wondering how the antihistamine tablets help?

I have had similar experiences - and it is a histamine thing we assume since antihistamines stop it, even once it has started. And HS did say ?allergic reaction - logical way to rule that out is antihistamines.

The ones with -zine on the end can help with vertigo with Cetirizine being the weakest so if that isn’t enough I use Promethazine, though it makes me sleepy but it’s a small price to pay if I’m that bad.

It could have been that your stress was too high for your adrenals for your adrenals to cope with. It made me dizzy and feel quite unwell and feeling generally ‘at risk’. However the dizziness wasn’t the type where if I moved my head the world lurched which is the one that I would use antihistamines for.

Motion-sickness pills often contain an antihistamine, sometimes along with other compounds.

That's sound horrible- I had labyrinthitis many years ago so know how you feel - have a look at these, and see if anything helps -

PMRpro has given you good advice - hope you can get it sorted.

I get bouts of vertigo, which sound as you describe! I take prochlorperazine which is an anti sickness pill that also includes help with dizziness, but makes me a bit drowsy. I take Cyclizine if I want to stop the sickness, but not feel drowsy. It helps, but not as much as the prochlorperazine. My Dr suggested trying the Brandt Daroff manoeuvre, rather than Epley. Same result, but easier to achieve, especially if you’re on your own. To determine ear, look 90 degrees to right, then move head quickly to look straight ahead. You should feel the dizziness and/or nausea. Wait a while before doing the other ear. But sounds as if you think it’s adrenal issues, so the above may be no help! I have had adrenal issues myself, on 3mg steroids, but they were different to 5he vertigo.

I found just a 500 mg capsule of ginger root is a magical cure in my case. I once had labyrinthitis for many months and I was working as an anesthetist, but I could not work being that dizzy and I couldn’t take antihistamines and still work. I did take two capsules of ginger root about three times a day and I was able to work. Ginger is an old remedy. Ginger ale will have ginger in it. Do you want to do that or ginger candy? I was talking to Portuguese neurologist and explain all this that I explained to you just now and he agreed it’s an old remedy.

On a cruise we suddenly had a rocky boat and I took the ginger capsules so I could enjoy the cruise.

I have a list of things to try, thanks to all. I have started taking ginger and lemon tea again. Sleeping with 2 pillows whilst my neck permits and antihistamine at the ready. Even have stugeron. Don't want to try more than 1 thing at a time, though.

Am better at the moment but we'll see if the stress of today upsets the adrenals. Pretty sure that's what is at the root of it looking back at my notes but nothing explains that hour of nastiness that woke me up.
