Statins and gluteal muscle pain

following a discussion here about statins and muscle pain I’ve had a gp appointment. She agrees the pain could be either PMR, spinal issues ( I had lumbar laminectomy 4 years ago) or Avarostatin which was doubled in dose in June.

My chiropractor said my back seems fine and I’m on 2.75 prednisone and feel ok.

She agreed the simplest way forward is to stop statins ‘for a couple of weeks’. I wonder if this will be long enough so I intend to stop for at least a month.

It will be interesting to see what happens. My father was put on statins and he became like a zombie, when we convinced his new GP that he should stop as a trial, he became the life and soul of the party again.

At least she is willing to try - lots will try to deny it is a possibility.

get advice about stopping statins..you can get a rebound effect on cholesterol levels

It isn't really a rebound effect - you take statin to lower cholesterol, if you stop taking the statin, you go back to the situation you were in before taking them, Which is much the same as with any medication. However, a rebound effect is that the production of the problem is WORSE than before the medication - as with PPIs. The acid problem can become even worse.

thanks for clarifying...you just end up where you started...which seems really odd...you'd think if they cleared some nasty cholesterol that state would linger ...and it would take a long time to go back to where you were (after a lifetime)...

No - your liver is producing cholesterol all the time, it is an essential precursor for many hormones amongst other uses. In fact, the reason it is very difficult to reduce cholesterol with diet is because most of your cholesterol needs are produced in house so to speak. Statins interfere with the process and lower the blood level. It's similar to the dripping tap of inflammation, more like a hosepipe perhaps - if you stand on the hosepipe half way along, less water comes out of the nozzle. Take your foot off and the supply is restored.

Thank you for the explanation. I eat well but I think it’s familial, my mother has high cholesterol . I eat very little dairy. I’m trying Benecol. Any other suggestions are welcome!

I’m really hoping the pain subsides otherwise I’ll be back to PMR vs spinal issues.

There are other statins - and other drugs when you can't tolerate them.

When I started statins (albeit it was only 5mg) I immediately felt an increased muscle fatigue so after a few weeks my GP and I agreed to change from Atorvastatin to Rosuvastatin - for me that made a big difference and hasn’t bothered me at all. Everyone is different so I guess you could discuss with your doctor and see what you two decide is best

I've tried Rosuvastatin and Atorvastatin and both give me muscle aches, but the worst is the brain fog, stomach cramps (the kind that bend you over) and diarrhea. As soon as I stop, everything settles. So GP decided maybe 5 mg would help. Same symptoms. When I mentioned trying Ezetimibe, she wanted to know where I heard about that. It was thru our forum, but if cholesterol is still high with next week's bloods, I will request Ezetimibe. Rather not request anything at all.

after 3 days without Atoravastatin 40mg …. I have less pain! I do hope this is the answer.
