On 2mcg - is there a way to tapper?

Hi all

My Dad is finally on 2mcg of Pred everyday. I would like to ask if there is certain way to approach coming off the pred? Do you go down to 1mcg for a few months, or do you take 1mcg every other day etc? Dad has only recently gone down to 2mcg daily. So far no symptoms or pain :)

Thanks :)

It is usually 1mg, for 1 month, the reducing down 1mg for another month, not mcg as you state in your question, The best advice is to speak to his GP. Hope this helps

For PMR and/on GCA, we usually suggest using a slower taper - down to 0.5mg initially and then to zero. So long as your Dad has plain white tablets they can be cut with pill-cutter.

A couple of slow tapers here -

But do make sure he is okay after the drop from 1mg to 0.5mg before he embarks on the drop from 0.5mg to zero.

Thank you so much for this. My Dad has read both links and is going to tapper slowly :)

Going to zero for one day then back to say 0.5mg for perhaps 6 days then back to zero and 0.5mg for 5 days can make it easier as it is not so frightening as to just stopping. It only takes a little longer.

Funny you say plain white tablets. I just started using my 1 mg tabs and noticed they are orange. They have a split line on them though so I assumed they were split able . They also are larger proportionally than they logically would be if you look at my white 2.5 tabs. Does that make any sense and yes in the US Thanks!

As long as they have a split line then okay..

apologies for confusion, by plain I meant uncoated - shouldn’t have included ‘white’ - that’s UK ones…I should know better 😊

When I was on 2mg I reduced by 1/4mg per month (actually every 5 weeks using Dorset Lady’s plan). Best of luck!

I’ve been stuck on 2 mg for a couple of years now. I even recently tried dropping a 1/4 of a mg on two days per week. I really suffer the next day. Can’t believe 1/4 makes a difference. Last year I managed a very slow taper to 1.5 and stayed there for three weeks then had a major flare . I think I might just give up and stay on two. At least I’d have a life. Let us know how you get on .

How I got to zero is by using the dead slow method and reducing by .5mg. Once I dropped I'd stay there anywhere up to 4 mos and making sure my bloodwork was to my liking. Most of all you have to feel good before another drop. You've come so far don't rush. Good luck
