Hi it’s taken six months of agony however today after last round of blood tests I am starting steroids tomorrow. I am very nervous especially as I have glaucoma, the doctor said I have no choice I must take the steroids. Anyone else taking meds with glaucoma? He also warned I could feel very strange for the first few days, any advice please? Thank you in advance for any help 🙏

In my case it was like a miracle had happened 15 hours and 26 minutes after I first took them. I hope they work well for you.

What dose are you starting on? They were right re you might feel strange. High doses can do that and you need to remember not to overdo it thinking you are fine. Do you see a good ophthalmologist for your glaucoma? I can see that would be a concern for you so maybe having a chat with them might help you on that front. Hopefully others will be along with more suggestions on that front. Were you diagnosed with PMR? It might help to say a bit more about your symptoms and dose suggestions etc.

Thank you for replying, going to pick up steroids shortly, only had telephone conversations with doctors over last six months plus blood tests. So have been in pain a long time and just referred to physio however because of last blood test doctor made contact. Grateful at last I might get some relief 🤞🙏

Hi and welcome!

I assume it is PMR you have, not GCA? Can you put more info on your bio - it helps us to help you.

If it is PMR then it should be 15-20mg you start at and the lower doses will have less of an effect on the pressure. Did the cataract op 2 years ago not relieve the pressure problem? But you do need to be under even closer monitoring because of it.

Others will be along with a lot more info.

Thank you 🙏 I’ll go back to my profile and put more information in. My pressures did go right down to 10 now stabilised around 13/15. Always a worry though however so pleased I had cataracts done before PMR came on, so really grateful about that 😊going to get steroids in the next hour so fingers crossed they help. 🙏

Well so far so good! Only day three however pain in shoulders, arms and legs feels so much better. Seem to be ok with the steroids so far, very tired and feeling slightly strange which is fine considering the pain is so much better! 🙏

Hello,I have glaucoma. You should get your optician to check your pressures before or soon after starting Pred, then regularly ev 3 months or so thereafter. If the pressures rise your opthalmo may reccomend increasing your eye drops.

That’s a good idea why didn’t I think of that! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏

If your pressures are already a bit borderline or you have other eye issues it might be prudent to get your pressures checked after the first month of Pred.

Hi Dorset Lady I read your information last night, can’t tell how helpful it was! And thank you so much for your reply today. Well I’ve taken my first steroid tablets , I’m really not good on medication so 🤞all goes well. I’ve planned an easy day around home just in case. So good to know that there are people like yourself who are there for us all 🙏🙏🙏

Good… and medication (of all sorts and for any illness) can be scary - but you have to tell yourself it will make you feel better than you have for the last 6 months…

and good idea to have a few quiet days.. good luck.

I don’t have glaucoma although an opthamologist once said I did but it was changed by her senior who measured my cornea and found them to be very thick. 6 months ago I had a steroid implant into my right eye for macular oedema which caused increased eye pressure. They are not too worried and have never been worried about me being on steroids for PMR I was given eye drops which have quickly brought the pressure down.

I hope your pressures are not affected too much by the steroids. I would say just keep them monitored. I hope you are not in too much pain and that the steroids work quickly

Hello Sunshine ! As everyone has said , get the pressure in your eyes checked regularly and tell your eye department that you’ve started taking steroids . If the pressure increases then they will increase your drops . I think most people manage their condition this way , but recently my pressure in one eye was through the roof and drops weren’t having a good enough result . My consultant decided to insert a shunt into my eye to relieve the pressure , which he did it under local anaesthetic .

Since then my pressure has been perfect and I no longer need drops 🤗. I’m still on 9 mg pred too .

So try not to worry about your glaucoma because I’m sure it can be managed one way or another . Good luck !

Thank you so much for sharing. I am so pleased you are ok and your pressure is well down. I will let the hospital know as I think I will be the steroids for a while yet. 🙏
