Does anyone see a private Rheumatologist who is also practicing in the NHS who will treat the whole person and listen? At my last appointment with my Rheumy which was on the phone, he gave 4 minutes. I’ve just really had enough with him. Needs to be in the South East/London.
Many thanks ☺️

Dr Rod Hughes, based in Chertsey is well recommended on this site. I have had a few telephone appointments with him, but he also sees people in person.
My Rheum says there are no experts on GCA and does things by the book.
Consequently I am stuck between a rock and a hard place as my sympathetic GP defers to him. Any advice as to a NHS/private consultant in the North West/Cheshire area? Prepared to travel to experience empathic/listening, experienced approach! Thanks..in hope!
Dear me, that's a bit arrogant. And who does he think wrote the book then? Does he think a non-expert book helpful?
I would say that Prof Dasgupta is pretty much an expert in GCA and he is still around - he set out to learn about it after a patient was seen at his clinic too late to save their sight. Professor Vanessa Quick in Luton is up there in the next generation. Prof Justin Mason was one I'd have trusted, taken from us far too soon and a massive loss. Of course there is also a gentleman in East Anglia who is an expert in GCA - he says so himself but I class him as on the "self-praise is no recommendation" list and would run a mile.
Unfortunately the NW is a bit of a desert for some reason. MrsNails has had good experiences at Telford/Oswestry I think but they keep retiring! Rod Hughes for private gets a Michelin 3* - worth a journey. Not because of particular GCA expertise but comeone who listens and thinks before doing something.
Thanks...where is Prof Dasgupta? I have heard of a Dr G Heath in York but unsure as to people's experience? Similarly staff at the Kelgren Centre in Manchester? Is Dr Sarah Mackie at Leeds more to do with PMR?
Dasgupta has retired and (I think) a bit dated. Sarah does both but no private and a waiting list a few miles long as she is only part-time clinical, doing research the rest of the time. Put up a post asking specifically what you want and where you are willing to travel to. I'm sure someone said recently about someone good in the NW-ish.
Well he was old enough to! Apparently almost the entire department in Fife went - so one who wanted to delayed his going. But getting a rheumy there is like hen's teeth - since that will be my next residential stop. I think I'll stick here a bit longer until they've sorted things out a bit.
My Rheumatologist does private work. He's based in Essex. Dr Peddasomyajula. He's very good and approachable or at least I think he is. He does look at the whole person rather than things in isolation. Been seeing him under NHS since 2016. He does private work at various locations in Essex.
