acid reflux problem

Hi everyone on this very helpful platform. As previously stated, I have been on prednisolone since September 22, and have very slowly decreased the dose from 15mg to 2mg which I am sticking with for the foreseeable as when I reduced lower the aches and pains started again. My question is has anyone had any acid reflux from taking this medication. It has only just started about 10 days ago. I have never been prescribed omniprazole and wonder if this could help. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Acid reflux is a realtively common complaint by patients on plain pred and is the reason that many doctors automatically prescribe a PPI alongside pred.

However - although it could be because of a long term effect, I would have expected it to have been a problem sooner, at higher doses. If this is a new thing, I think you need to speak to the GP about it, whether it is linked to the pred or it is something else. New symptoms should always be looked at closely.

Are you eating/drinking differently from at home? Was it a problem before you went to Spain?

no, my diet is exactly the same, the only difference is that for the previous 10 days I was using Cordisyl mouthwash twice a day for gums that were bleeding, I have stopped using it now as I didn’t have this problem before.

I was talking about mouthwashes with the hygienist recently - she says they should be banned except when used for specific procedures by the dentist. They do more harm than good.

Thank you, I am hoping that this has caused my acid reflux.

Just what my hygienist said a while ago. I kept getting oral issues and she said the mouthwashes used every day destroys the good oral flora. No problems since stopping

In case it is of interest I am on Famotidine 20 mg - one to be taken at night. I was told that it was to stop the Pred burning my stomach and guts. I also take Gaviscon after meals sometimes to stop reflux. It's not easy to understand what damage Pred does in general to our organs and in particular the eyes. Are there any articles for lay people on this topic?

I have also been warned about daily use of mouth washes.

Hope there is nothing nasty going on and you get help to sort it out.

Sounds like you've found the culprit. But don't forget to dunk the pred in thick yogurt when you take them, even 2mg.

Yes I had acid reflux. Just as I was nodding off = barf :/ So Omeprazole it was and I cut curry , lactose and pickle type foods out after 5pm. That and the Omeprazole sorted me out. I am on 6mg these days (Pred that is) More on that....

Yes I have. Was on Pred for just over 6 years. It was on and off but quite severe sometimes. I have now been Pred free since 1 February and find the acid reflux is still there but constant. Have stayed on Lanzapaole and Gaviscon. Don’t know if it will remain on repeat prescription 😊

Hi Gillian’s,

Similarly to you, I have been on Prednisaline since February 2022 but I was prescribed Lansoprazole along side them from day one. I do suffer acid reflux occasionally so take them in the morning before eating anything for 1hour as well as teatime before evening meal. Does help. I’m currently on 8mg at the moment as have had other health issues and had to go up and down. Hope you find this is helpful and hope you get some relief soon. Take care

thank you for your reply. I think in the light of other responses I should have been given omniprazole at the beginning, but this acid reflux has only just started and I am currently in Spain but on my return I will contact my GP in the memo time will make do with nexium or Ba is in and hopefully that will solve the problem.
