Steroid timing

Just a quick question as memory gone! I’m struggling in the mornings with really bad hip pain which is making walking quite unpleasant. I’ve been pushing through as I want to keep my steps up. So if I take my steroids at 2:30am should I take the complete dose of 10mg or split it with 5mg then and the other 5mg when I get up at around 7am? I intend to have a small banana or a drink of kefir to protect my stomach.

Currently in Lanzarote so no problem with the weather for my morning walks😃.

If you normally take as one dose then stick to that……don’t really want to be changing two things at once.

Are you sure hip pain is PMR though?

Thanks DorsetLady, pretty much as I thought.

Now that’s the big question is it PMR hip pain? Well the pain dissipates by late morning when I’m taking the steroids at around 7-8 am. I have had investigations in the past for the same pain, mri etc, and nothing found to explain the pain. As posted recently I reduced from 10mg to 9mg and hip pain increased forcing me to up to 15mg for a couple of weeks. So yes I’m my mind it is PMR causing the pain but do we ever really know🤷‍♂️

Do we ever really know?… well if ordinary painkillers help pain, then maybe not PMR … although for most people 15mg would probably mask other issues. If nothing else can be found, then sounds as if yours is PMR related.

Guess you can only see how the change in timing helps. Hope it does.

Enjoy that warmth! Gorgeous clear morning here in Truro but not inclined to go out yet it’s unusually cold & frosty. Such a good idea to be on Lanzarote just now. You are so motivated to keep moving Brian, well done!

Either - whatever suits you best and gets the best result.

I think the hip pain needs investigating though - bursitis would also improve with the pred and while PMR can feed bursitis, sometimes there is something more underlying it starting up. And it could be OA starting up.

my hip pain isn’t PMR, it’s quite differEnt from the hip pain I had prior to diagnosis. I’ve now been diagnosed with bursitis in left side & sciatica on right side…but for my brain, the bad pain is in the hip area! Oh, & I have OA in the hip, but not too bad.

Go to your GP (if possible) and get an assessment. Could be some kid of bursitis or something else wrong with the hip as well as PMR. Bristis is very common alongside PMR, I've had it in the past about 10 years and think I may have it again now.

Hmm, I don’t have much faith in my GP diagnosis bursitis and they would probably just refer to rheumatology with a minimum 6 month wait. I am going to ask for a referral though as I am currently not under rheumatology as moved last year. That’s all got wait another 5 weeks to arrange as I’m currently getting my vitamin D in Lanzarote 😃 Of course that’s assuming I can get a GP appointment when I get home🤷‍♂️
