dealing with Norovirus

Friends visited us yesterday however they had had grandchildren and son and daughter in law staying with them. Son had been up the night before they visited us with sickness and diarrohea and his little son had also been sick. They were ok however and came to us for lunch, however we were very careful not to touch them or hug and kept our distance, washing hands etc etc. All we could do. We also ran our viral air purifyier. Last night after seeing us Nina (who we saw yesterday) has come down with it too. We feel a bit like sitting ducks.

Can anyone advise what to do if I am unable to take my daily dose of steroids due to sickness? Or if i'm sick after I take my steroids (coated Pred) will they still be ok? You really are the experts and my only real guidance as to what I may need to do in the event. I'm currently taking 6.5mg due to start reducing to 6mg on Sunday all being well. Thanks so much.

If you can get Pred to stay in system for about an hour [provided plain uncoated ones] you should be okay.

Hope it doesn't come visiting - but whatever I'd be inclined to hold off the tapering for a week or so - just to make sure... 😊

EC tablets - that may complicate things - as you say fingers crossed.

Had a lovely Christmas thank you 🌸

If the plain tablets stay down for an hour you should be OK. Coated preds are a different matter - they take up to 5 hours to get to the region where they are absorbed so vomiting within a few hours could mess things up.

Cross the bridge when you get to it - it may never happen. If you feel ill, adrenal crisis ill, call 999 or 111 if you can't get the GP. YOu can always get an injection of hydrocortisone to cover you.

And next time you have guests potentially bearing gifts like that - decline. My nurse daughter is horrified - if you have D&V, you NEVER go visiting anyone, and especially older, chronically ill friends.

Thanks v much for this, think i'm catastrophising a bit but remember being v sick after my bisphosphonate infusion and having to call 111. After 3 calls they ended up recommending we go to A&E. I take coated pred because of a sensitive at times troublesome tum. Ho hum! Hope you had a great Christmas and will enjoy an equally fun New Year.

So sorry to hear you are playing the noro waiting game. One Christmas, while I was still working, I contracted noro from a care home I had visited on Christmas Eve. No one had told me that they had an outbreak.

I felt fine until after I had eaten my Christmas dinner and then all hell broke loose. Worst D & V experience ever. 48 hours of it then a couple of weeks as weak as a kitten. I got medical advice because like you was concerned about absorption. I think I recall being able to keep water and meds down the following day. I know I couldn't keep my pain meds down and that was terrible as I was in pain from noro and my other conditions.

I didn't go to A & E but I called my private medical insurers GP helpline and got to speak to a GP and pharmacist. You can obviously try 111 for advice too but often they are really busy. I had COVID before Xmas and 111 were helpful but the clinician callback took 8 hrs not the "3 hours" I was told. I have to say that they were helpful though.

I do hope you don't get it. I would advise keeping some dehydration drink sachets in the house to sip on. You get very dehydrated very quickly.

Thing about noro is it's violent and the worst is over quite quickly and then it just takes time to recover from the viral assault. If you are lucky you then get about 14 months immunity or at least I did. I worked in a high risk environment and so had to be mindful of all infection control protocols but unfortunately other people are not so you are at risk. I do hope it passes you by and you have a happy and healthy new year xxx

My endocrinologist said that, if I cannot keep the prednisone down because of vomiting, to give myself the emergency shot. That will carry you for a while.
