Pain free dressing removal!

Had to go to Pharmacist to check on one of those skin tears we’re prone to. She was so horrified at the bruising as I took off the dressing that she used this magical medical adhesive remover. Lift Plus Medical Adhesive Remover (Ref 5503). Input in your search engine and you’ll find several suppliers.

Then she gave me the rest very kindly! It absolutely works. You spray it along the edges of the dressing and gently pull back BUT it doesn’t tug or stretch, just gently glides off. Wonderful!

Thank you for that. The “little child me” would have been very grateful - my mum used to sneak up on me and whip my plaster off quick.

..or use skin- friendly dressings/plasters in the first place… Mepore [or similar]

Even those can stick 😱😱😱

They certainly can!

But not quite as bad as some…. Fingers crossed you don’t need either….

Sounds preferable to soaking a dressing with good old water!!!

Aye, well, less said about that the better! Just nipped to the chemist to pick up prescriptions using the old car and its diesel before it goes this afternoon, and the computer was down, couldn;t read the digital prescription to dispense it. Glad I'd gone though - I must have them by Friday! Hopefully it will wake up later and they can package it all up for me to pick it up.

reboot or heave ho. I soak mine off in the bath at night and put fresh dressings on before bed. Will check this out. Looks good. My arms and legs are now a wonderful patchwork of scars and lighter new skin.

Thelmarina profile image
Thelmarina

I know that patchwork! Vit E cream recommended to decrease scarring…hey ho. Takes a long time to get dressed in the morning 😀

Thelmarina profile image

I remember those days too! And fillings with no anaesthetic, and ice on the inside of windows, and tapioca..😱😂

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toThelmarina

I certainly had locals for fillings - what sort of dentist did you have! And tapioca was - mercifully - NOT a feature of our puddings!

Tapioca- nah☹️

cycli profile image
cycli in reply toThelmarina

Remember that, as a child our dentist used a low speed drill, no anaesthetic. Gas for extractions. Vit e won't do anything for the scarring I have sadly. Ice on windows and bed sheets from breath and frogs spawn. Horrible. Not good old days

Thelmarina profile image
Thelmarina

our dentist had his equipment in his back room! I did get gas for an extraction. So much for nostalgia for the good old days. Still - I’m still here!

Thanks so much for the tip . I'm regularly getting problems removing dressing so I'm going to get some. Just surprised that the doctors haven't suggested to me before. Thanks again , take care , Bee

Doctors don’t DO plasters (well not that sort) -nurses do.. 😉

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toDorsetLady

Well , yes , still I'm surprised they haven't used it rather than going through the usual panic they have when they try to take the dressings off. Maybe it's rationed and locked away in a special cupboard.I even get a skin peel with micropore even if it's only been on for a test to hold the needle in place!

Don't think I've ever seen a doctor do the full plaster either! Last time my daughter had one she was offered a glow in the dark one. Probably sounds really good in theory until you wake up in the middle of the night and get terrified by what looks like a floating dismembered limb!!!

I steered her towards a purple one instead 😆😆😆

I know! Fragile skin is a problem with aging anyway - let alone us PMRmites!

Just a thought but have you tried the antiseptic spray on plasters. I’ve recently discovered them. You clean and dry the wound then put on the clear spray plaster. It leaves a shiny film which is waterproof. It works for minor cuts and grazes but I’m not sure how good it would be on large or deeper wounds. If you are in the uk Elastoplast do one and Boots have their own version 🌸

Wow! Great tip. Thank you 👍🏻

Blearyeyed profile image

I used this a few years ago , it's like glue. I think it depends how sensitive and fragile your skin is. It can sting quite a bit when it goes on and can cause irritation. It took the skin and wound healing away when it came off for me. So I think it's one of those individual things.I'd suggest people tried a little on healthy skin as a test before the used it on a wound area just in case it isnt suited to their skin.

Tiggy70 profile image
Tiggy70 in reply toBlearyeyed

Good point. So far I’ve only tried it on a scratch on the back of my hand. My forearms and shins have the most fragile skin. It worked well on my hand as our hands are in and out of water a lot. It did sting a bit when I put it on and felt tight. I’m allergic to most types of plasters including micropore tape so always looking for a better solution.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toTiggy70

Is it the adhesive that is the problem? What about the Cohesive bandage I mentioned somewhere else?

physical-sports.co.uk/tape-....

Tiggy70 profile image
Tiggy70 in reply toPMRpro

Yes it’s the adhesive I’m allergic to. I get raised red patches. It was quite a problem when I had shoulder surgery last year. I’ll have a look at the cohesive bandages thanks.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toTiggy70

Are you allergic to the white micropore hypoallergenic paper tape or the pink stuff? It's a pain isn't it .

I have tegaderm dressings which I don't seem to react to at all , I can wear them in the shower and they come off without tearing the skin.

I also use hydrocolloidal dressings but you do need to check which type they are if you are allergic to cellulose, for example.

Tiggy70 profile image
Tiggy70 in reply toBlearyeyed

I have issues with most types of tapes/plasters. The white micropore isn’t quite as bad if it’s not left on too long. After I’ve had my bloods taken the nurse uses a ball of cotton wool and a strip of the white tape. If I forget and leave it on until the end of the day before I remove it I have red marks. I do have a mild latex allergy.

Blearyeyed in reply toPMRpro

That's the bandaging used for compression or support on injuries rather than as an open wound covering. although I suppose you could put a dry gauze dressing on and then the bandage but it would be quite bulky and it wouldn't be easy to get air to it.It is good for support from minor injuries or weak joints while you exercise. I use it quite often after a subluxation you can direct where you bind the joint so that it's secure without reducing muscle strength and essential movement .

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toBlearyeyed

No it isn't - they used it here for covering wounds on OH as sticky stuff just removed half his arm. It isn't bulky - and they use it for me too. I do know whereof I speak!!!!

If I remember in time I always say no micropore as pulls steroid skin up 2 much and can tear. If a small jab, a small round plaster (like a corn plaster but no medicated lint) works well. If left comes off by itself in a couple of days, or in the bath. Large very sticky plaster can also tear the skin. Cut off if can rather than pulling.

herdysheep profile image
herdysheep in reply tomusicality

I think those small round plasters have been relined with super glue. After bloods done I just press a pad on as long as I can muster. A recent fall and badly gashed elbow worried me about removing dressing. First one came off easily. 2nd one slightly more challenging as the sterri strips needed removing, but without further damage and a pretty good heal. I was concerned about it bleeding everywhere but they did a great job in out of hours. I guess the skin on the elbow is a bit tougher.

Thank you. I have huge problems with my skin. I’m in Italy and had to go to the hospital yesterday after a bang from my suitcase caused haematoma etc. Nurse horrified by my skin. Such a problem.
