Sorry , I couldn’t find previous posts.

Does anyone remember what dose of pred they were on when their hair went curly ?

It has happened to me before , probably when I was at about 5mgs or less . I can’t remember how long it lasted. Last time my hair was just under ear length , and it was fine , and very wavy.

This time , hair is shorter and mortifyingly curly . Picture Hilda Ogden , with bigger curlers, take out the curlers and thin hair remains standing up in circles. I’m not going out for at least a month!

Does the curl drop away when you go lower on pred, and at what dose ?

I have tried 4 different options so far to control it .

Hello, mine has gone from straight to curly to mad scientist and back again throughout and at different doses. It has fallen out a couple of times too. No dose correlation for me it seems.

Hmmm , I wondered whether to wait it out . It is bizarre.

My curls disappeared gradually and are gone completely at 5 mgs. I miss them. My hair is fine and straight, I got waves. I found it fun. Again my hairdresser advised and helped. It beats being a baldy biscuit. ( Scottish phrase). 🙂

I like the phrase, -havnt heard it before. I think I have to try a different hairdresser , who cuts with the curl.

I decided to learn to love my curls - though to be fair, I had wonderful ones in my 20s! Now it has grown out somewhat I have classical 1940s finger waves that just happen after it dries naturally from wet. The nape hair that is shorter is tight corkscrew curls ...

Before Covid I had a smooth classical bob even with pred - when I could find a hairdresser who could cope with naturally wavy hair! By the time hairdressers here were back at work I had got through the awful stage of growing hair and decided to leave it. Eventually I have found a local hairdresser who understands "just tidy please" and the curls settled well.

My curls are erratic , some up , some under, and leaving scalp showing . Have been trying to retrain it for a few days now . It is winning . I am starting to see the funny side of it .

The right cut is essential - nuigini will back me up on that.

no curls for me but my hair has almost totally stopped growing in length - just gets thicker and heavier and coarser. This has been more pronounced as i have reduced pred. At higher doses it would come out in handfuls which could be handy now!

That is really different! We should b able to recognise other sufferers in the street from our mad cap hairdos.

I had put it down to the length of time on pred, rather than the actual dose, but since I have been on 5-7.5 mg almost the entire the time, that is the dose. It isn't anywhere near as curly as you describe, but it has been poker straight all my life and it is now developing a definite kink, to the amusement of my hairdresser. She noticed it first.

I don’t think it will after having had prednisolone for 6 years!

After 60 years of straight, fine hair, mine began to develop a bit of a wave several years before I began to take Pred. After few months of Pred (15mg - 7.5mg) it became very wavy indeed, and quite coarse, didn't lose any. I've been at 5mg or under for nearly 12 months now and my wavy coarse hair isn't going anywhere. I changed hairdressers several times because I thought that they weren't doing a very good job with it. I now realise that I was expecting something to be done with my hair that was no longer possible, because it was different. So I have now become relaxed about it. I have found a lovely hairdresser who says that I must 'go with the flow'. Your description of Hilda Ogden hair really made me smile. Good luck!

You DO need a competent hairdresser for curly hair and I, too, have changed hairdresser repeatedly, especially here! They have to know they cannot inflict THEIR desires on curly hair, it will do as it wants so cutting for a blowdry is not an option. I have had amazing hairdressers in the past, all of whom told me they had clients who spent a fortune to get what I had and if everyone had hair like mine they'd never make a living. I think it is easier in the UK as there are lots of people with "textured" hair because of ethnic populations.

I agree . The hairdresser has to go with the wave. She was a new hairdresser in the salon. She totally wet it and cut it . Even the blow dryer doesn’t overrule the mess. I must admit the inside of my head is a little erratic nowadays. Maybe there is a connection . 😂

She was the first person I thought of when I saw my morning hair , but with larger rollers 😂

My hair didn't go curly but became more like wire wool. Started early in my journey so somewhere between 25 and 20mg per day and returned to normal at around 10mg.

Mine is still curly at 2mg!

Just over the course of the last year, my hair gets very curly very wavy if I do not blow it dry. When I blow it dry I can style it per usual. It has become very thick and grows very quickly and does remind me of my mother's hair around this age. Also it is become darker with more salt and pepper color then just silver. My eyebrows have become darker as well and you can actually see them without having to color them in. This is one of the pluses I guess.

Flutterbies57 profile image
Flutterbies57• in reply toMissus835

Thicker , darker hair. You are lucky. If only we knew your secret .

Missus835 profile image
Missus835• in reply toFlutterbies57

Not darker, looks more low lighted. The only "secret" is Pred. I was quite content with the silver. Lol.

mine was wavy to start with, went thin so I cut it short. It is now almost Afro in curl. I am on 0.5mg Pred now, but the curl came along with a vengeance when I was on 2mg or so.

I don’t mind the curl- it saves having to comb it. I just run my fingers through it. I don’t even need a hairdresser to cut it as the curls hide any hacking I do with the dressmaking scissors. I shall miss the curls if it goes back to wavy.

Flutterbies57 profile image
Flutterbies57• in reply toHalleysComet

😂😅🤣 Mine look like I put my finger in the power socket this time.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador• in reply toFlutterbies57

Have you tried wetting it in the morning? My curls get flattened overnight and then look a bit mad scientist so I spray water on it, comb it down and let it dry naturally. Always looks a lot better.

And don't wash it too often!!!

Naturally curly but fine hair. Thinned on second time of doses over 15, came back under 10. Brillo pad improving under 5. But overall it is thicker and drier and looks better than before.

Flutterbies57 profile image
Flutterbies57• in reply toViveka

Brillo pad improvement ? Another saying I have not heard before. Hope it stays the way you like it . It is quite odd isn’t it , that it has affected people so differently.

Curly? ? If only! I used to have wavy…verging sometimes on curly - quite thick but fine hair . Since starting pred (60mg) January it’s turned into a straight straw, like a scarecrow ( think Worzel G) . Now down to 15mg and it’s no better. Also losing it by the ton. ( true that’s been happening since menopause but nothing like the quantity that drops now) . Every morning an entire bird’s nest accumulates on my hairbrush…. Am wondering if this, (and moon face etc) will ever get back to something resembling former state….

Your current curls sound rather lovely although I appreciate its not what you’re used to…

Anyway sorry I can’t help. I just don’t know. Others seems to have good advice.

Worzel , oh no . I didn’t quite explain my properly . This time they have gone more like quite high tunnels, going in different directions. 🥴
