Hi everyone.

I hope this doesn’t post twice. First time it wouldn’t work.

I have been on Pred for 16 months and in the last month or so my hair has changed. It is now curly - it was straight. The texture has changed becoming more course and likely to frizz. But also I have had white hair for years (very early colour change) but now I have many odd hairs growing through dark brown/black. Has anyone else had this experience?

Thanks

My hair didn't change texture but I do have dark "highlights" - which look good in white hair.😂 I used to pay a fortune to have highlights done professionally.👵🏻

Over the last three and a half years my hair has gone through various stages of straight/curly, thin/coarse, falling out/staying in and colour alteration. I’m on very low Pred now and my hair has stayed the same for a whole 4 months.

My hair has been quite mad. Curly, frizzy total mess. Not nice leave it alone curls. I get a keratin treatment to try help, even with that its hard work. !!

Thanks everyone. Will try some keratin. It’s just another thing to add to all the other side effects. I am certain I am particularly sensitive to the steroids and definitely not happy with the growing salt and pepper hair look where once was gleaming white! Hey ho! I keep telling myself, though PMR and Pred is debilitating, it isn’t life threatening!! 🧑🏻‍🦳👩🏼‍🦱😁

The only dark hair I got with steroids was facial - the peach fuzz was very dark! But I did have the change of texture with "just" PMR, the previous wave/curl became unreliable. Seemed to improve a bit on prednisolone but then it turned into a brillo pad when I was on methyl prednisolone. On switching to prednisone it again returned to normal for several years but at present is dry and frizzy if it gets wet and isn't dried properly. I got wet one morning and couldn't go and dry it before heading off in the car - real afro-style by the time I got home hours later! Then I experimented last time I washed it - no, won't be doing that again. The top, longer hair is OK, it is the shorter bits around the nape that get damp with sweat in hot weather that are the problem. I'm still trying to conjure up the courage for a first haircut for 6 months ...

Most of us on pred experience changes to our hair. Some unfortunates lose hair, or it becomes thinner. I have always had thick wavy hair that could be coaxed into loose curls. After pred it is much curlier. On a good day I have nice defined corkscrew curls. On a bad day it looks and feels like straw, a real frizz fest, and if I lift a strand at right angles to my scalp it stays there! I'm a redhead and no colour change apart from more grey hairs around the temples which at my age I can't really blame on the pred.

It is reassuring that others have hair change too. Thanks for responses 👍😄

My hair started to look like a haystack, very dry and unhealthy. It also became curly. I tried everything under the sun to improve its condition. I had it cut very short which was a good idea. On the plus side I have always wanted curly hair, having had straight, greasy hair all my life.

I 've always had fine baby hair and dead straight. On 45mg and tapering down for GCA it grew into fluff then thinned out - awful! 18months later I'm on 10mg and tapering for PMR still dead straight (I'd love curls!) but now hardly any hair loss so I must assume it looks thicker. Haven't been to the hairdressers since last Xmas so now almost totally grey and wearing a pony-tail. This with facial hair that seems to be spreading down my neck and gets blacker and thicker is another joy of Pred.

My epilator paid for itself just in the few months I was on methyl pred and developed a lovely black beard!!! Bit ouchy the first time but worth it!

Which one did you buy? Currently paying £50+ every 4 weeks at beauty salon!!

Mine is a Braun silk epil - ancient, really ancient (like well over 25 years ancient)! It has 2 speed settings, the slower one hurts a bit less. They now do specific ones for facial hair - are they any better? No idea to be honest. They come in all price levels from £25 or thereabouts at Lidl to £150 in posh shops - mine is no doubt the cheapest but it still does the job. Once you have used it a few times it will go well over 4 weeks - they catch even short hairs that waxing doesn't.

You really don't like spending money do you?🤪 I'd have had 4 new ones in that time!😂😂

I am the original eco-warrior. If it still works/fits/isn't falling apart I resent spending more money because I don't see a need to. I think my daughter is even worse! But I do like to have good quality in the first place - which is why things last so long I think :) - and when I do spend money I do it properly!

I used to be a bit like that but the boredom of PMR changed me.

My hair was straight also, but turned curly after being on pred for a year. It also is much thicker. However, I had a big hair loss before it started growing back in curly and thick. After 2 1/2 years currently on 7mg pred and in a slow process of tapering to 6.5. Was at 80 mg a couple of times for GCA and PMR.
