Total Hip Replacement tomorrow - yay!

So having been in a lot of pain with my right hip since last September and staving it off with injections, finally I am going into hospital tomorrow for a total hip replacement. Feeling grateful but trepidacious. Have read Dorset Lady’s tips - thank you for those - and have taken them onboard. Doing my best to have a positive mental attitude about it. They keep telling me that at 60 I am young to have this op and may need another one in 10 years’ time - I hope not.

I didn’t realise I would have to stop my HRT abruptly leading up to op, which has made me feel somewhat weird and am having hot flushes, and also seem to have developed urge incontinence. 🫤 But I am looking forward to getting rid of this bone on bone pain. 🥳 Wondering how this op and recovery will affect my PMR. 🤔

Hi,

All the very best for tomorrow - yes the thought can be a bit scary - but just concentrate on the future and being about to walk about without that pain.

There are many on here who have had op whilst still having PMR and have come through just fine - sure they’ll be along shortly to advise.

Just make sure everybody in hospital is aware you are on Pred - and do what you can for recovery afterwards but don’t push yourself too hard. 🌸

Thank you for your kind response - I really appreciate it. Am going to a rehab clinic for a couple of weeks after the op as we live in a townhouse with lots of stairs and not a lot of floor space. Hopefully it will get me well on the road to recovery. 🤞

I didn't have PMR when I had my hip replaced but was one week away from my 55th birthday - and I'm now 70. Things have moved on a bit since they used to say 10 years was the average life of a hip replacement!

And just think of life without that awful pain. Within 2 months I was standing on one leg (the operated side) on a trampoline in the physio suite. Incredible and wonderful.

Thank you! Glad your hip is still going strong. It was my surgeon who said that but he is not young himself so maybe a bit out of date with that info. 🤞

Yes - it will be such a relief to get rid of this pain and “just” have the PMR to deal with. 😊

Good luck Suzy, I didnt stop my HRT as I wasnt told too, and I was only in hospital 48 hours. You will soon be out of that truly awful pain x

Thanks so much. ❤️ Re the HRT, I am not sure I really needed to stop it as it is patches, but the pre-op nurse insisted even ‘though I queried it. I was put on it after my total hysterectomy back in 2016 so I guess this is my first experience of menopause. 🤔 Yes - can’t wait to get rid of this pain. X

I am sure it will all go well. After my THR I could not believe that it felt like my own hip but it didn’t hurt. I still lie in bed wondering at it. With modern materials I would have thought your new hip should last twenty five years. You hear of people now who have had their hip that long. Hip replacement is one of the most successful opeations in the world.

Good Luck for tomorrow.I have had two hip replacements while having Pmr.I had second op while on 5mgs pred.You will find a big difference a few weeks after the op.Just make sure you do the exercises the physio will give you.

all the best I had 2 total hip replaced m so thankful m now 61 now it’s knee replacement make sure u move the around exercise is the key to recovery

Hi Suzy Te, Wishing you all the best with your op and recovery. I had a THR when I was 60, 13 years ago and it’s still going strong. I didn’t have PMR back then. Like others have said make sure you do your physio each day. My surgeon said to me “you only have one chance at healing, make it a good one “🌸

wishing you well. I’m scheduled fora hip replacement in 2 days. Remaining on 10mg until 2 weeks after surgery. Then continue on tapering schedule. 21 days after surgery I can resume my RA infusions. I want to feel better & get back to living. I’m 72 & haven’t been under the knife since ‘92!
