Hi

Any advice on my thinning hair

Female age 65 and my hair is now so thin currently taking 7mg Pred

Sadly, I don’t think very much can be done for thinning hair….a side effect of Prednisolone for some. This topic comes up from time to time and you can read about people’s experiences in ‘Related Posts’ on the right of your screen. Here’s one to start you off:

I started on Pred in Sept 2022

and noticed the thinning aroun Jan this year

I suppose it could also be a part of ageing but quite depressing.

It is common for people to shed hair and sometimes skin when the body has had a systemic shock or infection. It is often delayed by a few months. Mine nearly all fell out about 5 months after diagnosis. It grew back but its thickness and density has fluctuated throughout, with another big fall out when I had poor adrenal function.

I feel for you as all others do here with hair thinning and being on Prednisolone. I had a full head of hair in 2020, and then when diagnosed with PMR and went on Pred it became thin. I think it is an acute combination of the illness and prednisone that causes it. I do take Marine Collagen (not Bovine as it upset my tum) and now on Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) as take MTX. It has helped quite a lot.

Having it cut regularly helped too. All the best. 🌷

I have a very thick head of hair but noticed several months in to taking prednisolone that my hair brush was full of hair each time I brushed and indeed started to see a significant thinning . Long story short; after this happening on and off for a while, I eventually realised that the hair loss pattern was linked to the omeprazole that I was taking. After a switch to another medication the hair stopped falling and within no time was showing regrowth, even though I was still on the tapering schedule of prednisolone. When i mentioned this to my Rheumatologist she was surprised but on looking at the extra small print on the Omeprazole , it was stated as one of the lower incidence of possible side effects.

Omeprazole has a variety of strange effects that most doctors deny! As I just said - why I back up all I can with genuine scientific publications for the sceptical doctor who condemns all non-medics as ignorant idiots and anything learned online as rubbish ...

I experienced hair shedding about 4 months after starting pred (5 years ago now). I take biotin daily to combat the hair loss. January/22 I also started taking Methotrexate and noticed hair shedding so I upped my biotin daily dose. I also wash my hair infrequently (about once every 7-9 days), use a wide tooth pic to comb it out (not while hair is wet), refrain from using roller brush and hair dryer rather let it air dry, and no longer colour my hair with permanent hair colour. Hope this helps.

My hair has been thinning in the last 3 years.I bought cedarwood oil to blend with shampoo and I have alot of growth coming in.
