PPI’s Side Effects: Hi, does anyone suffer sore... - PMRGCAuk
PPI’s Side Effects
Have a read of this a bit further down about a serious side effects.

I once had to dress the legs of a patient with blisters and rash on them that were diagnosed as a reaction to Omperazole.
That sounds awful, taking it for Hiatus Hernia and GERD. Thanks for the link.
It isn’t common though. Do you think you have these issues?
More the sore joints added HH Symptoms too. It never ends😞
Omeprazole made me feel peculiar and made my acid worse. As PMRPro suggests, the other type is worth a try. If you do stop the Omperazole you do need to tail them off slowly to avoid rebound acid. I thought that by changing to another type that would have me covered so I could stop quickly. I then had 2 weeks of boiling lava before it settled. Ask advice from the prescriber regards this, though they will probably say just switch. If so and it does get rough, hang in there for a bit before deciding the new one doesn’t work.
I will do. Thanks for the advice. I was told by the doctor doing the endoscopy that I should have my main meal at breakfast/ lunch and very little a night but I don’t know if that was just until esophagitis healed.
although Ive only been on 40mgms omeprazole for 3 months (for unexplained weight loss acid reflux, and malaise ) the dreadful headache I’ve had since starting it is too much so I’m weaning myself off by (halving to 20 for 14 days then alternate days at 20 and hopefully zero) to avoid rebound reflux. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy revealed nothing and LFT ok so I suspect organ involvement as part of Adult Onset Stills Disease .
GP not interested now I’ve stopped losing weight so I’m left to my own devices . I still think it’s shocking GP can say cancer on the phone after blood tests and then just dismiss it all when blood returned to normal. The question still remains of the root cause and will it be recurring but I guess I’ll wait and see.
Best way to find out is to stop it - and use an H2 antagonist instead (cimetidine, famotidine etc) for a while (different mechanism, different side effects).
Rash is a listed "minor" side effect and there are claims that long term use of PPIs increases the risk of RA developing, Long term use of PPIs is associated with a 300% increase in the risk of autoimmune disease and many of them denonstrate joint pain,
Is there something else to take to protect the stomach while taking meds like pred, motrin, and the like? That is why I take it...but sometimes I have side effects. Before pred I would just stop it...but I was thinking that was not a good idea with the pred especially dance I am still on high dose....Thanks. M
In terms of medication there are H2 antagonists like famotidine and cimetidine - the older group of drugs that are frequently ignored as old-fashioned and less effective but in fact the difference is minimal. Their adverse are different and mostly fewer.
I asked my last rheumy about other meds to protect my stomach from all these meds and he said other meds did not work the same...so no it was the only one. I would like to try something else because I can tell I am starting to develop side effects. I assume the 2 you mentioned are prescriptions....or OTC? Do you have an opinion on this?.
No, they don't work "the same" but there are a) several PPIs which do have the same mechanism and other newer ones may suit you better and b) H2 antagonists are returning to favour as the long term adverse effects of PPIs become apparent. They are available OTC but usually in smaller doses.
What it comes down to is do PPIs work well for you - they don't work well for about a third of patients and may cause intolerable adverse effects. My husband practically exploded if he took them! I have never taken any of them - except when I need to take NSAIDs as well as pred,
Right. Ok Yes, I was put on them when I went on 800.mg motrin. So I have been on it for years. I found that after awhile I can get stomach issues snd stop taking it for a bit. Since I added the pred I have taken it consistently though. But as I said above, my stomach is starting to feel strange. But I don't want to not have something to protect my stomach. Taking these other meds would be good. Ok then
...Thanks for the info. Ms. PRO.
