PMR or arthritis

Hi all,

I have arthritis in my hip awaiting hip replacement however I’m taking 6.5 of Pred. I have really bad pains/stiffness in that leg from top to bottom of my shin which the Dr has put me on gabapentin which so fat (3+ weeks) has not made any difference. Could this be a PMR flare or is it the nerve pain the doctor has said it is?

If it’s only in the one leg, I doubt it’s PMR, but it may be….more likely to be referred pain from your hip. Have you tried other painkillers?

Of course a few days of more Pred may prove or disprove if it’s PMR.

I am on tramadol naproxen amitriptyline paracetamol. I was put on morphine but it did nothing so stopped it. Now on1200 mg of gabapentin with the option of going up to 1500. So far that is not working☹️

In that case then you need more medical advice I think

Does it get better with rest and hurt when you move again?

if sat down or laying down I can feel if I move but it’s a lot worse when I get up to stand then eases off slightly when I walk about however still very painful

Hi I was in the same place as you waiting for left hip replacement . PMR mainly affected both legs and walking very difficult. Had quite a lot of pain in left thigh only down to knee. In an effort to loose pred weight gain before surgery I cut out bread pasta cake etc and within 5-6 days 80% of the pain went. Over the next 8 weeks the rest of pain went. It made no difference to my walking which I could not but was so much more comfortable and able to stop painkillers apart from bedtime. I have since read online that carbs effect some arthritis quite severely and that was the case for me. Good Luck whatever you choose to do.

That’s very interesting I do eat a lot of carbs! The doctor thinks I have nerve pain as well as arthritis. So confusing having both as well as PMR

Could it be common or garden shin splint from walking flat footedly with weak hips? You don’t have to be an athlete to get it!

I used to get awful pain and a burning sensation in the lower part of my leg whilst waiting for a hip replacement, especially when standing, but it all went after the operation. Just waiting for the other one now in June, touchwood 🫤

Thank you Sam pete! That’s encouraging! Apparently it’s nerve pain ☹️
