Everything suddenly tasting awful
Hello, can you tell us a bit more about what has been happening for you like symptoms and dosing? If it is a new development it my first thoughts were either Covid or oral thrush but there isn’t much information to go on.
I lost a lot of weight when I first started on 60 mg prednisone. All my food had a metallic taste. It was from the prednisone. When I got to 40 mg it started to improve.
What dose are you on? Are you on any meds apart from Prednisalone? Have you had any viruses? It is hard to be helpful without more information.
Taste buds dulled. Food doesn’t taste the same.
When on 30- 40mg of pred my tastebuds were weird. Everything savoury tasted sweet. Eventually things returned to normal as the dosage reduced.
Hi, I also had a massive loss of appetite when I was on high dose of prednisolone and lost a lot of weight as a result, nothing tasted good and I stopped enjoying food. It slowly went away as I decreased the prednisolone and also gained my lost weight back. I suggest making sure you eat wholesome meals even when they don't taste well, you're body is still fighting and needs all the good nutrition it can get.
It will all soon go back to normal! Good luck!
Hallo grannynormacath,From one Granny to another.
Everyone has unique body makeup.
All will have different symptoms.
Each reacts in different way.
If appetite small make every mouthful beneficial. Plenty protein, fruit, nuts, green , red and yellow veg, potatoes etc.veg, cream, milk eggs, fish, oily fish, avocado, cheese, organic meat if meat eater. Add cream to soups .
Eat all the yummy things you want.
Full fat bio yoghurt, home made cakes,
Lots of dark chocolate.
Lots of lemon water, milky drinks, etc etc.
I was diagnosed in Oct. /22with pmr .
Completely unable to walk, move unaided, sit up, turn over etc etc, Terrible pain shoulders, lower back, everywhere, jaw, head hurt, couldn't chew .
hands were swollen and useless.
Given prednisolne 15 mg per day.
Magic from day one on pred.
Just managed to cut down to ten mg....after a struggle. You need one mgs tabs to cut down more easily. But do not decrease preds until pain free and happy.
My appetite, previously poor, becamehuge. Weight gain huge.
Never been ten stone even when nine months pregnant.
Now moon face... and need to lose weight as not good for arthriti hip and knee.
Trouble is sleep.
I do not sleep more than an hour at a time.
Up and down all night.
Before pmr I slept 8 hrs a night.
Itch all night too.
Whatever you do never run out of preds.
Take what exercise you can.
If you can,t then so be it.
Know that this does improve over time
Never get down because it will pass
Maybe try a different sort of pred. It seems there are several kinds.
Do not take on empty stomach.
April now.. so 7 m0nths on....I can walk quite a bit with help.
Very little pain on 10 g a day and will take them forever if need be.
Hands not right yet but can feel they are mine.
Left one not so very good. But hoping it will get a bit better.
Old nerve cells not so good at regeneration...
Hope you take
vits D3 and K, vit c, B vits and magnesium for cramp.
Don,t watch TV news or anything miserable.
Get plenty fresh air .
Be happy.
Get well soon.
Get medical help if you feel overwhelmed by it.
Do not stop preds suddenly...very dangerous to do so.
I am washing you well.
There are lots of very experienced, knowledgeable folk on here so do not hesitate to ask anything.
I am just a beginner...

I so admire your bright down to Earth attitude Freya! A valuable lesson to all here, live your life as best you can, and try eliminating all things Negative within it, best way to go on.
I agree that TV does kind of Waste so much of one’s own life as you look in at Others, all actively doing Sump’n!
So best thing is go try do it yrself!
Be lucky, & thanks - S
Thank you Polypoly,,Very kind of you.
I have a Masters in worrying but now realised, rather late, worry is of no help.
Stress just adds to the problem.
Grannynormacath,
Taste loss may just be a passing blip.
I had it for months . It remained after covid ,,,but it passed.
Try frequent tasty snacks.
Have nourishing drinks.
Take care of yourself.
It will all be better soon.
grannynormacath, I guess I need to know more about dose and symptoms. I have been on Prednisolone for 23 years and I still get a metallic taste every now and then
Even being a bit dehydrated all the time can make your mouth taste bad and affect the taste of what you eat. Sometimes we forget to drink enough water, so maybe measure out enough water for the day in a jug or water bottle and make sure to drink it all by the end of the day. Fluid from tea and coffee, etc, also counts. The amount you need depends both on your own body and on activity level, also, of course, how hot the weather is.
I had this problem before PMR and pred. Everything tasted awful. My GP correctly suspected it might be silent reflux and prescribed a PPI which totally solved the problem. However I have now gradually come off the PPI and am taking Famotidine. Apparently it is meant to have less side effects, although for me it does not work as well as a PPI. At the moment I am persevering with it and taking other measures such as sometimes having to sleep propped up. It might be worth investigating this possibility.
