Hi everyone

Just wondering if steroids damage your cartilage??Have just had an MRI on my painful swollen knee and the result shows 3 separate tears in cartilage- can also feel soma pain starting in my other knee - I suppose it’s good that it isn’t PMR so can try reducing steroids again am on 5 mg at present

My orthopaedic surgeon said that the steroids had eaten away the cartilage in my hip.

It is said to encourage deterioration of cartilage - but so do NSAIDs. And age.

You have the result - have they suggested any remedy?

thanks for replying it helps so much-am going to be seen by knee consultant mid Dec

at least I know cause of pain so hopefully can restart reducing again - Dr Hughes thought going up to 10mg Pred, then 7.5 then down to 5 would settle it down but it’s so v sore can take Paracetamol until I get seen

I too lost all my cartilage in one hip in a period of 18 months. Said by my Rheumie! I had taken no nsaids for over 5 years. PMR May 19 now down to 4 mg.

Had a hip replacement 13 weeks ago.

Regards.
