You guys know so much more than the doctors!!!!!!!!
I looked up brown tongue and found photos that look just like mine. So I think it's brown / black hairy tongue. I hope it is anyway! The doctor didn't even suggest this.
Apparently it can be caused by medications like prednisone and also from tooth whitening toothpaste, which I also use. So I will stop the peroxide toothpaste and start gargling with salt water / nasal mixture as you suggested.
God, you all are SO freaking helpful. Thank you so much.

My tongue went black in May this year when I took a course of Metronidazole (antibiotic) after I’d had an emergency extraction of a broken molar tooth. Very alarming, but my tongue returned to normal a few days after finishing the treatment.
Try bicarbonate of soda. Mix two teaspoonfuls with a few drops of water to make a smooth paste. Using a toothbrush clean your tongue and the inside of your mouth. I hope this helps!
i had it in August, I was terrified when I saw it! Turned out it was chlorhexidine in the mouthwash. I t went in a couple of weeks. I did brush it a few times but then just let it clear itself.
