Scaly red dots -anyone else?

I developed, in the last several weeks, on my left thigh 3 scaly, pinkish, scaly dots. They don’t itch or hurt. I tried a weak steroid type cream I used for othe similar type stuff but this one, though improved a little, just stays. I tried that for 2 weeks then tried a good moisturizer to no avail. Visited the dermatologist who said these are psoriatic type excema but NOT psoriasis. The treatment is a strong steroid type cream I cannot afford @ $1k. That particular cream is the only one without propylene glycol to which I am allergic.

I have a couple of scaly skin dots. I have attached a very bad photo. Are yours like this?

Yes, 1 large one and 2 smaller ones. That’s all. Skin doctor Said it was Not psoriasis. I was wondering if it was not tied in to the Shingrix vaccine I had recently.

I have a couple similar to piglette ’s picture -on back of upper arm - put it down to age. I do keep my eye on them, just to make sure there are no changes .

Mine appeared in the last few weeks. Very strange. I hoped it would just go away again, but it does feel scaly.

I'd have said a keratosis

mayoclinic.org/diseases-con...

It usually suggest light tan but I think they can be a bit pinkish too and in fact Cleveland Clinic suggests various colours

Yes…. That’s what I thought about mine.

Mine is not a keratosis, it is not really raised, more eczema/psoriasis feel.

I have a couple of patches like that - not raised.

I wonder what they are. How long have you had yours?

Not sure - I've only noticed the one on my left forearm for a few months. One on my face I've had for donkey's ages.

I suppose they are not causing problems so I may be stuck with them.

I had the diagnosis of Psoriasis for years it looked pretty bad on my feet and caused a lot of problems in my ears, including severe ear infections that closed my ears up completely. Never at any time was I prescribed a strong steroid cream, specialist or otherwise. Only the weak stuff you use and lots of moisturising base cream for the feet and drops with old fashioned syringing for the ears it helped them.It just kept the symptoms at bay. I was told this was the best I could hope for. The ears itch a bit now but have been completely normal during my 6 year Pred treatment. They have been producing ear wax ( a good thing) they didn’t when inflamed. I hope it won’t return as I reduce my 5.5 mg Pred dose further. Things that have been suppressed can emerge again. I expect you’ve looked at the obvious culprits like new clothes washing products or shower stuff or creams or the sun and creams even.

My foot “ Psoriasis “ has been recently diagnosed as athletes foot, run wild, which I didn’t know happened. My Podiatrist took a sample of it and tested there and then. I used a product for it that you apply once. I can hardly believe it, after all these years, it has gone. Have you been tested for fungal infections?

I would not allow anybody to relieve me of $1000 for something that probably won’t work. I would carry on taking care of my skin and general health with very natural products, even homeopathic remedies like calendula or Rhus Tox might help. I imagine that dermatologist drives a nice car.

I hope you can pick out some relevant bits from my story.

Not the derm’a fault; all of the usually prescribed meds have propylene glycol in them to which I am allergic. He struggled to look up an appropriate cream in the drug data base and the only one that lacked that ingredient was expensive. He said I could do nothing or see if my insurance covered this one. He does not sell any remedies.I do NOT have psoriasis he said. That was a description of the dots.

Interestingly, before the DMDRs, a neighbor, with severe psoriasis on his back, said it vastly improved with Vit D3 5,000 iu daily.

I take it back then, he sounds like a decent chap. Are you already on high dose vit D? I am on 1000iu. We should be as Pred depletes it I believe. Apparently, I don’t have Psoriasis either which is a huge relief because Psoriac Arthritis has been mentioned. I seem to have developed quite a lot of skin things, like warts, moles, skin tags and even a couple of scaly patches ( small). I have put it down to age and on the “think about it later”pile. A doctor has said that the tiny warty things are harmless.

1000 IU isn't high SJ - barely more than the daily min requirement. I take 4000 IU, less than that and my blood level falls slowly

My latest GP has replaced this with Calci-D this also has 1000iu and my bladder has started protesting. She was very stern about it after the Osteopenia result from the bone scan. Sigh!

What was the product you used for athletes foot? Interested for my daughter...

Lamisil once. It was miraculous. Even my ugly toenails are gradually improving. I feel a bit sheepish, I thought I had Psoriasis for years.

Brilliant thank you. My sister will be pleased to hear a suggestion, especially the toe nails!

Was lichen planus considered?

piglette profile image
piglette in reply toherdysheep

In my case it is not lichen planus, but could be for the others.

Would expect my dermatologist would have sorted that out.

Hi, you could try occluding the basic steroid cream. In other words, you apply the cream then either wrap something round it or put something like zinc ointment on top. It helps absorption.

It beaks my heart whenever I read a post where someone describes being unable to afford the treatment or medication they need. So thankful for our NHS here. Is there any way you could get funded for what you need?

Since they don’t itch or. hurt and Arron my thigh—not publically displayed, I will up my D3 and see what happens.
