CALCUIM AND VIT
I have. I’ve had PMR for over 5 years and have been taking vitamin D supplements and calcium for all that time. I’d be interested to know why you ask.
What do you call a long time? I took a combined calcium and vit D supplement for probably 5 or 6 years. Then I stopped the calcium and take just vit D with plenty of dietary calcium now. But 4000 IU as a single supplement. So vit D for 13 years, calcium was 6 or 7 years I suppose.
I started off taking Vit d3 tablets prior to my PMR diagnosis and my GP said I would be on them for life. On my PMR diagnosis I started taking a combined d3/calcium tablet. So for over 5 years
Thanks Koalajane I've been taking them 5 years, will keep taking them Take Care x
Hi there,
I took them both as a joint tablet for 2yrs and then decided I didn't want to take calcium anymore. I continued with Vit.D3 and K2 though.
One year later my blood test results showed I still had satisfactory levels of calcium, achieved through some 'tweaks' I made to my diet.
Obviously I'm aware this may change in the future but for now I don't need to take calcium supplements.
One less medication to take!
Me -10 yrs -stayed on them after finishing Pred as DEXA scan report suggested I stay on them. No issues.
Since 2013, a combined calcium and D vitamin - AdcalD3.
I have taken Adcal for 4 years since starting pred for PMR - I think it causes constipation which I eat prunes for if needed
Vitamin D for 10 years to benefit bones
Adcal/Calcichew for 10 yrs + for me. No issues
I think I've been on Calceos (calcium and vit D combined) since about 2002 or so. Can't remember exactly. No issues.
I've been taking over the counter calcium/vitamin D for many years, possibly 30, as my mother had osteoporosis, and I wanted to avoid if possible. No problems at all.
When I was diagnosed with PMR the rheumatologist was happy for me to continue with it in that form.
DEXA scan showed I had good bones "for my age".
(How I hate that phrase!)
Good luck.
I started taking calcium supplements maybe when I was 40? There has always been D in the supplement. It was calcium citrate. Am now 75. At time of PMR diagnosis, 2015, I was taking the calcium plus a 1000 IU dose of D3. Dr told me to double the D, but it turns out that was not a good idea. I have a diagnosis of sarcoidosis and this led to too high D level. Nowadays I continue to take a calcium supplement, 2/3 the recommended dose, and a D capsule every second day. Last tests, in the spring, calcium level fine, D level something just over a 100 (in the measure where that is considered a healthy level). I added K2 in 2015 (200 mcg a day), but I don't know if they even test for that.
I tried calcium over many years, off then on. Calcium supplements cause bones spurs and tendonitis with me. I drink a lot of milk, eat some cheese, eat green stuff and get my calcium from my diet and the occasional Tums. I take 1000 Vit D per day. I also take 500 Liposomal Vitamin C per day for my bones. Dr. Levy, a cardiologist asserts that calcium supplements cause more problems than they solve. He also asserts that focal scurvy is the true cause of most osteoporosis. I do not know if that is true, but am trying it for the past 18 months. The proof will be when I get my next Dexa. Because of so many health issues I refuse to take any of the prescribed meds for bone health. I am also trying to walk a mile a day. Weight bearing exercise stimulates bone growth. Some days are very difficult. I hurt a lot. I am beginning to suspect that osteopenia is a Latin word that means your shiny hiny is getting old. Osteoporosis is a Latin word that means you are so old you fart dust.
Hi. I was put on Calcium and vitD3 about 15 yrs ago. I have Osteoporosis and Dexa scans show now under control, but did take a while to build up my Vit D3 levels. Went to private clinic to get proper tests for calcium and vit D3 levels as doctor kept saying they were fine, but NHS testing is rubbish! Keep taking these, as our absorption levels drop off with age. I take mine in a combined tablet form with Magnesium and my Osteoporosis has not progressed in last five years.
Hi Harry, when I was first diagnosed I took calcium and D3 but then heard a cardiologist talk about the possibility of calcium build-up in the arteries. Now I take Caruso's D3 and K2 combo, and get my calcium through three serves of dairy daily. Going well for the last 3 years, bone wise.
