Weight loss vs diabetes

In a bit of a quandary ... I have to watch carbs & sugar to avoid pred-induced diabetes.

At the same time, I'm also worried about losing too much weight. I've lost about 40 lbs. recently, and am not totally sure it's all due to diet.

Is there a good way to add a few pounds without upping my carbs & sugar?

I think you should be checked out by the doctor, unexplained weight loss can point to illness. When it happened to me it turned out to be Graves Disease, a thyroid disorder that led to Thyrotoxicosis. The internet is teaming with healthy weight gain advice. I tend to like what the Mayo Clinic has to say. Good luck! I hope you are ok.

It's really not unexplained - should have mentioned that. My diabetes scare had me really turn around my diet. I expected to lose some, but as much as I did. I've actually only lost 25 since before the diet. GP seemed quite happy. I don't, though, seem to be able to stop. Really hard figuring out what's the diet, what the diabetes (totally under control now), what might be the LVV, etc.

Are you eating enough of your non-carb food? That is pretty much unlimited and maybe you just need more calories.

But as SJ says - if the weight loss is unexplained, it needs investigation although - how diabetic are you? That can lead to weight loss.

Yes definitely get checked out by a doctor and they can maybe refer you to a dietitian to help add calories to your diet, so things like low GI carbs such as whole grain, seeded or granary bread. Also adding more fats and proteins. Good luck!

Low GI carbs don't help with avoiding weight gain in pred - carbs is carbs, irrespective how they are digested

Having been in a similar situation as winfong having lost a stone and a half due to cutting carbs and my weight dropping to 7 stone, this was the advice from a dietitian to help me stop losing weight. The absorption of these carbs are over a longer period so stops the sugar spike caused by the more unhealthy carbs.

Wow. I would be happy losing 10 lbs but I agree - you need to see a doctor. 40# without trying needs to be checked out. Good luck.

I actually was trying. Had to go on a low-carb, no sugar diet because of a steroid-induced diabetes scare. Looks like I may have gone overboard a little.

You can get low carb protein shakes or bars to get extra calories in. Or high fat low sugar foods would probably work for you. Avocado, olives are two healthy fats.
