Asthma, Covid and Pred

I tested positive for Covid last Saturday (2.7.) Not too bad, sore throat and a bit tired.

However, it has increased my asthma symptoms, which are usually very mild. I was aware of wheezing, and slight shortness of breath on exertion.

I upped my inhaled steroid (Fostair 100/6) from 1 puff twice a day to 2 puffs four times a day, (max allowed on my Asthma Plan) but kept my pred at 5mgs. This has controlled the symptoms.

What I don't know, is how inhaled steroid dose equates to oral dose?

Can anyone help?

As I've managed without upping the pred so far, I'm very reluctant to do it now, but will try to reduce the Fostair as soon as possible.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

It does have a systemic effect but only really over a long period, months more than days/weeks.

They suggest rinsing your mouth after using the inhaler and using a spacer to reduce the amount left in the mouth which you can then swallow and so it gets into the bloodstream. Also reduces the risk of thrush.

Thank you. I do use a spacer and rinse my mouth after I use the puffer. My dentist always reminds me, as well as the asthma nurse.

It looks like I needn't be too concerned about the puffer adding to the pred.
