I can't ever seem to get an apt as it is....

I was told a few days ago that it would be 4 weeks before I could get a telephone consultation.

So the surgeries will have to employ additional GPs?

I was offered a15 June appointment with my GP yesterday! Maybe it's a kill or cure policy...?

I had a telephone appointment with my doctor an hour after I rang plus a face to face appointment 2 weeks later and a physio appointment 10 days after that.

What are their hours now? My father used to be a GP, and he and his partner worked 24/7 between them - including weekends, bank holidays, Christmas Day, the lot - except when a locum was employed to cover for one of them when on holiday. I know it’s very different now. Somehow there has to be a way of encouraging more people to become GPs: I know they’re very much under pressure, and I’d rather have a GP working shorter hours than no GP at all

It says by reducing the daytime hours it will encourage more GP`s!

It isn't just encouraging them to become GPs - it is getting more people into medical school in the first place. ALL specialities are struggling, all over the world.

To be fair - often when they are apparently only working "part-time" as GPs they are also doing a day or more in another capacity - as "special interest" shifts in a hospital, working in A&E or out-patients to expand the appointments available there. Like teachers, their f2f contact time is often matched by several hours of admin - part of the reason that they have their noses stuck in the computer screen while you are with them for the totally inadequate 10 min appointment the government allows them to have to see you without penalities.

This seemingly "extracurricular" activity is of benefit to them and the patient - it makes them better aware of many of the problems and the up-to-date approaches.

But we never really hear the GPs side of the story do we ?....we just think we know...!..Our large practice has had real difficulty replacing retired/leaving doctors since way before the pandemic....If its so well paid and a doddle of a job ! then why aren't more doing it?...

I’m not quite sure what the DM article is designed to achieve. Obviously there are problems accessing GP services and there are not enough GPs in the country (for a number of different reasons) but the constant criticism and demonisation of GPs in certain parts of the media is simply going to lead to more GPs becoming even more demoralised and taking early retirement thus making the problem even worse.

They work incredibly hard. We shouldn't assume that the only reason we can't get an appointment is because GPs are lazy. The government is also not helping by undermining senior doctors' pensions and charging them unbelievable amount of tax which is a disincentive for working overtime as you are practically working for nothing above a certain sum of money.

I thought that particular piece of nonsense had been stopped?

For firemen and senior civil servants, yes, for doctors, no. One would hope that this is something someone is paying attention to as it will be increasingly difficult to get an appointment across all disciplines.

If you’re cynical you might conclude it’s deliberate…

Indeed but even then only changed for the fire service because they litigated about the discriminatory pension changes along with another group of public service workers (judiciary).

Yes, one despairs about BMA.

Could be cynical there too ...

I have spoken to my GP several times during covid. I have seen her during that time too. Twice she popped down to see me after a blood appointment. More recently I have seen her twice within a few days. I know she works part time 4 days a week but if she is part time she is there from 7.30am until 5.30pm, so she certainly does work hard. Others at the same practice start earlier and finish later, so not all practices are like the ones described.
