I’m wondering if anybody else has choking and coughing with phlegm that leaves you breathless and heaving after having a meal.
I’ve been to the doctor lots of times, and I’ve been told it’s symptoms of my Hiatus Hernia.
The second last time I went to doctors he prescribed doubling up on Lansoprazole, 1 on a morning and 1 on a night, it didn’t help a lot still very bad coughing, last time I went (last week) a new doctor said it was the hiatus hernia and she subscribed Famotidine 1 on a night with my Lansoprazole, I also take peptac liquid 4 time s a day.
I’m so fed up with choking, does this sound right to you, does anybody else have this.
Thank you in advance for any replies.

Hi. I have white fluffy phlegm that makes me couch all day long as I can not get it up. It makes me gag and retch.. I have Barrett’s hernia at. The only thing that stops all the symptoms for me is a codeine tablet. They are the only cough suppressant. Dr probably won’t give you them for this. I get them for pain but only occasionally. I don’t take them daily. Hope this helps
My husband had similar symptoms - I don't think we ever really associated them with the hiatus hernia though although in retrospect that probably was it. A PPI only made him far worse.
Have you tried keeping a diary of what foods make it happen/worse? There are various ways of self-management, including avoiding the trigger foods and eating several small meals instead of larger amounts at once.
Hi. I used to have uncontrollable fits of coughing as well as other unpleasant symptoms. An endoscopy revealed a hiatus hernia. I was prescribed omeprazole which resolved the problem for me. I know there are issues around this medication and I have managed to reduce my dose. Sometimes you have to chose between the worst of two evils. Hope things improve for you
I raised a son with asthma. His breathing at night was difficult from mucous. In those days they did not believe in medicines for children with asthma, i found that that while he was asleep, I would make a tent around him using an umbrella with a warm air vaporizer under it and I stayed in the room all night, the breathing would get better quite a bit from the stram. Of course it was not comfortable but effective and cool air vaporizers did not help him at all.
The warm moist air thinned out the mucus that was affecting his breathing.
One time he coughed so much that he coughed clear mucous on the bed and getting rid of it allowed him to breathe better that night.
I suffer similar to you and take the same meds you are on. The Famotidine does help me. It was thought I had swallowing difficulties that were causing the coughing/ choking and I had a SpeechTherapy consultation who prescribed a strong Gaviscon to take with each meal and last thing at night. It really does help me. I also have gastritis and can only eat small meals - so little and often helps me. Keep going back to the doctor as you can’t go on like that. Good luck.
