I have broken my ankle. Nothing to do with pred or weak bones. Went over on my boot heel (not even that high) but broken in two places. External then internal surgery required. Reading pred can slow down healing. Worried. Anyone had similar ? The doctors all said needed to act quickly as pred can harm the skin and cause soft tissue damage. Currently got external scaffold holding all in place. In ten days another op to sort internally when skins calmed down. All going on about pred can slow bone healing etc etc .. has anyone else broken bones.

Ouch, that’s not nice! To be honest you are where you are and whatever needs to happen for your ankle, needs to happen regardless of your Pred. You don’t say what dose you’re on and dose can make a difference, but it’s too late to try to reduce as week or so of a lower dose isn’t going to radically change anything because the effect of Pred rumbles on long after you reduced and you don’t want a flare on top. Bear in mind people have hip replacements and other surgery without event on Pred, sometimes not on small doses either. I would just take it as it comes and deal with what comes along IF it comes along, which it may well not do.
Hi. Of course yes lots hip surgeries will be on here. Never thought of that ! Thank you. I do tend to go on the over thinking trip of doom. Just when had the relief of scan to prove it’s PMR and slow taper on my terms now. This happens. I’m on 18.75. Funny amount but from 20 to 17.5 didn’t cut it. So I did that as I’m wanting the taper to work ! Thank you for coming back to me
Hi,
Sorry to hear that, sure others have, can remember one lady broke her shoulder - hopefully she’ll be along and give advice.
Pred can slow healing, but most don’t seem to have an issue, there are lots of people who have had joint replacements done whilst on steroids.
You might like to have at look at the the sick day rules, and discuss with doctor - they may be applicable - and obviously when you have operation surgeon/anaesthetist needs to be aware you’re on Pred. Good luck when that happens.
Very sorry to hear this Buttonshutton . Think there’s quite a lot of us here that have broken bones. I fractured my proximal humerus in the summer but no surgery. The doctors were a bit alarmed to hear I had been on prednisolone for 6 years but it healed absolutely fine/no delay and I’m older than you. Everyone is different and certainly different fractures come with their own set of challenges but I would definitely recommend you lobby to get decent physiotherapy after, I was so lucky, had a brilliant NHS physio. Hope you’re not too sore and sending healing thoughts. All the best.
Hi Maisie. Beautiful name. Thank you so much. Very reassuring. They were concerned over the pred but I explained. Not really been on it that long consecutively in the grand scheme. Thank you again
You poor thing. I have had a couple of new hips and they both healed fine. Pred has caused skin and soft tissue damage though.
I cut my shin badly just by crossing my ankles and bashing the front with the very solid and rough heel of my snow boots - it seemed to take a while to start healing originally but the healed skin is fine -despite 12+ years of pred and quite a high dose and visibly thinned skin which was remarked on by the surgeon who stitched it (didn't really need a surgeon but that is how they work here).
Oh poor you, I too had broken femur, but that was just before starting pred, nonetheless it still took a good while before it was ok.
Just take your calcichews and risnonerdrate , or whatever one you use and follow physio advice.
Sending you a big hug.
