Have had a call from NHS referral team saying that as I have been on the NHS waiting list for hip replacement for over a year they can refer me on to a Nuffield Hospital (albeit 45 miles away) to shorten the waiting time for me. I have agreed and have to wait now to hear whether I am accepted on their waiting list. I am still on 8mg of Prednisolone and seem to be stuck at dose for now as any attempt to reduce brings on PMR symptoms. Has anyone had their hip replaced whilst still on Prednisolone?

Hip replacement and steroids
I think you will find plenty of us on the Forum who’ve been on pred when their hip op was done - including myself at our local Nuffield hospital in Leamington.I was only on two mg at the time, but I’m sure others have been on a higher dose.
It will all get sorted at your pre op, and with the anaesthetist, if my experience is anything to go by. My lot were pretty chilled.
I wish you good luck.

I had hip replacement in September but I had to come off prednisolone completely. My methotrexate was stopped two weeks before and after op.Every surgeon has there own way of working.Good luck with your op.I am on list for my other hip to be done.Merry Xmas to everyone especially mods for there time so glad I found this forum.
I have had two hip replacements while on pred. For the first my surgeon wanted me on zero, so I negotiated it up to 5mg much to his amusement! The second time he did not bother to negotiate and said nothing.
I had a total knee replacement when I was on 9mg. No problem with that at all. Just make sure the anaesthetist is aware you are on prednisolone. He/she will give you extra in a drip to cover the increase you need for surgery. Good luck!
Patients are being referred to Private Hospitals for surgery paid for by NHS in my area . I know of someone who had spinal surgery , an Op on his arm and now going to get a new knee. Also someone getting a new knee and hip.
I guess it is a win win situation for NHS and BMI.
No experience of hip replacement but here is a example of slow taper from prednisolone Here is the extremely slow taper which my consultant rheumatologist has put me on. He says that I shouldn't feel it, and that it doesn't matter that it will take ages - it's more important not to need to increase the dose.
