Why did you stop pred? According to your joining date and first post, you were just diagnosed in Jan this year. Have you discussed this with your medics, or just decided to stop.
If the latter you are running risks:
1: your adrenal glands are not fully functioning and you could run into an adrenal crisis and that you do not want at all.
2: in untreated PMR can and does lead to GCA.
If I were you I would re-start the pred today and consult your medics as soon as possible.
Any auto-immune illnesses are not to be messed around with at all.
Hi Advidkc, l’m assuming your doctors are happy you have stopped prednisone now? I really know very little about Nephrotic syndrome but often corticosteroids are a very important part of treatment of a potentially very serious problem . Presuming you are still on other immunosuppressants as you were before? I do think you need professional advice on diet - amounts and types of protein for example, not just calories. I see you’ve posted on the kidney forum too so you may get more answers but I’m not sure if anyone other apart from your own medics/dietitian could be certain to help. Sorry but wishing you all the best.
Hi Advidkc. It's probably true to say that if you're taking pred, for any condition, it's not advisable to stop taking it suddenly....particularly if you've been taking it for some time. Your adrenals become lazy because your body is receiving cortisol from the steroids but it isn't until you're down to around anything from 10mg to 3mg (varies with each individual) that the steroids no longer provide enough cortisol for your body and so your adrenals have to 'wake up' and start producing cortisol for themselves again to make up any shortfall. This has to be a gentle and gradual process and requires careful tapering so as not to cause an adrenal crisis, which can be life threatening. I think you need to talk to one of your medical professionals and take advice on this matter as mismanagement of steroids can have serious consequences. I understand your desire to come off the pred but please be mindful of the problems you may encounter as a result of doing this without the correct protocols in place.
I don’t think anyone can say how your body will behave with fat deposition because we’re all different. Personally, I found the tendency to put it in those usual places continued for quite some months after stopping Pred in Aug 2020, so I continued with a less severe version of the very low carb with high protein, moderate fats and mountains of veg. However, nephrotic syndrome can give you similar body shape for different reasons so Pred may not be the villain of the picture when at low doses. Also, you need professional guidance on your diet because the picture is complicated by NS so it is beyond our scope to advise because there is risk of making yourself very ill.
I know you have a vested interest in stopping Pred and I don’t know if you’ve read any of the replies to your previous post. If you have, you appear to have decided it’s worth risking adrenal crisis. This is your choice but you’ll find people on the forum will continue to caution you on that from what info you’ve given.
We’re not trying to get at you, it’s just concern for your well-being.
