I started on 15 mg of prednisone last week as PMR raised its ugly head. It got rid of terrible arm pain but knot in neck and stiffness is still a problem in my neck. I suspect this if overuse of right hand texting and using keyboard. I am going to set up appt. for physical therapy. I have surgery due Nov. 3 for cataract on my right eye. Left is done. The surgeon starts me on prednisone eye drops three days before surgery and the dosage lasts three weeks following surgery as dosage tapers down. I'm concerned about taking oral prednisone and the drops. Has anyone done this. I feel pretty yucky but it is a quick surgery and doctor puts you out. Should I go through with it or postpone?
Advice please: I started on 15 mg of prednisone... - PMRGCAuk

Logic I have copied your post on another thread to below no-one would connect it.
Oops
To be clearer, I first had PMR in 2018 and stopped prednisone finally a year ago. If that makes a difference....

PS : I cannot answer your question but someone who can will be along soon.
Many have had cataract surgery whilst on oral Pred, myself included, with no issues..but this us something you need to discuss with your eye surgeon.
I had a miraculous improvement when I first went on pred, but my neck was still a problem. I got one of those scarf things you heat up in the microwave to wrap round my neck which helped enormously.
Hi Logic 😊
I think the issue here is not so much the pred eye drops, which are not unusual…..
What I do wonder is whether the eye surgeon is aware that you’ve had a recent change in circumstances and are now on 15mg, having stopped previously? I think you need to discuss this with the surgeon if at all possible (email or phone them with details if you can’t get a consultation).
Good luck, hope things stabilise soon 😊
Nextoneplease x
Is it normal to have Pred drops before cataract surgery? I am having mine done on the 10 November, my only eye lost sight GCA 11 years ago. Nothing has been mentioned to me re Pred drops. They are aware of GCA.
I didn't have steroid drops in my eyes before either of my cataract ops, just afterwards. I was on oral pred at the time of both ops. No problems. That was in England. I think a lot of hospitals/eye centres vary a bit. Probably worth enquiring. My pred dosage did not concern them. They were more worried about my blood pressure, which I had not been aware of it being high. (Grammar?? sorry)
Hi Logic, can't help with most of your questions but can add that pred did take my arm pain away but like you not my neck which still hurts when I try and move it too much, occasionally radiates into thoracic back. I work at a desk every day and have physiotherapy too which does help a little as long as I keep it up. Doc tells me this is wear & tear and not related to PMR. Physio agrees it's mainly posture related. I am now on 3 mg pred and can't really tolerate them as it sends my anxiety through the roof which has started me with IBS.I wish you all the best x
Logic, I had both eyes done last winter while on 12 mg Pred. I was concerned about adding more Pred to the mix, and asked my Dr. She said that the eye drops would make zero difference. I hope you get through without a hitch!
There is no need at all to worry about taking oral pred and using eyedrops - it is like topical pred and that is barely abosrbed so the blood level will be very little different.
Hi, i had cararact surgery earlier this year whilst on pred, and I had to take drops for a week before, and it was no problem at all. I was on 4mg at the time. Good luck to you, having both my cataracts done has been life changing!
