Preds and Paracetamols

First I must say a huge thank you for everyone's welcome to me yesterday ,I was astonished, you all made me feel I had someone who has my back. :-) question now. I woke last night about 3am with a really painful arm and could not get back to sleep. I was tempted to take todays Pred but then wondered if that would leave me up the creek for today so had a cup of tea and two paracetamols, it did the trick and I went off to sleep again, now I am wondering if it is OK to mix the paracetamols and preds . thanks

Hi seamaid. I know Paracetamol is ok with pred and I take them occasionally if required.

Bear in mind if pred relieves pain it won't be PMR pain. Only steroids seem to be able to ease that.

If your on other medications as well as pred, then always check that none of them will interact with Paracetamol. Others with more knowledge will be along to advise you further though.

Fine to take paracetamol with Pred - but not ibruprofen , but as Kendrew says if it helped then it’s not PMR causing the issue.

Did you do anything yesterday that may have caused painful arm? Is it okay today?

Oh dear Thinking about it I was reaching up too often putting the washing out on the line, and bringing it in again !

Could well be that……Pred affected muscles don’t like repetitive actions! 😉

It’s not exactly a thriller…but it does have many twists and turns, and a has a happy ending .😉📚..what more could you ask! And becomes a bit dog-eared over the years.

Paracetamol and pred is OK - NSAIDs are less good as they can also irritate the stomach but the odd one-off dose is probably OK for most people. My rheumy uses them alongside pred occasionally but makes me take stomach protection in the form of a PPI (omeprazole) or H2 antagonist (famotidine).

But as has been said - if paracetamol sorted it, it is less likely to be due to the PMR.

I’m prescribed by my doctor to take 6 paracetamol a day, so that should show its fine...I only take four, but they don’t help my PMR pain at all, sadly!

I regularly use paracetamol to help with my arthritis pain. I also have been taking ibuprofen as am waiting for root canal in a rotten tooth :( Ibuprofen does tend to upset my tum a bit but I take it with food. To be honest I've had so many antibiotics that my gut flora is upset anyway! I am on 5mg of pred long term for my ongoing PMR.

I have learned from the this forum that paracetamol can help especially if it’s not PMR related. I take it fairly frequently as I have developed ongoing issues with plantar fasciitis and an aching hip and it definitely helps. I find it very hard (after 5 years of PMR) of not over doing it and some days it can be the slightest thing that I can then suffer from. I now feel comforted if paracetamol works as I know it’s less likely to be a flare!
