Can anyone shed some light on this. I have severe acute pain in my right heal comes from nowhere and goes it’s so bad I can’t drive when it’s there! No damage not been knocked, is this part of the PMR journey ☹️

I am on 6 mg Predisone a day and have just had a patch 10 mg of a opioid pain killer prescribed even This does not help,

Any advice would be great

Martin

I think - not sure - that plantar fasciitis can cause acute heel pain. Probably you need something other than painkillers to deal with this, maybe some kind of orthotics. As far as association with PMR or pred, not necessarily, except that both the condition and the treatment can cause muscle weakening. Hope you can see a foot doctor about this.

Ugh painful! I have had it since January and at times struggle to walk. Thought it was Plantar Fasciitis and treating it for that. Had my first biocmechanical podiatrist visit last week. More exercises and insoles which help a little but he noticed differences in my foot compared to the other one. I think previous comments are right about the PMR & pred maybe contributing to muscle weakness but I’m no expert but It would be worth you getting referred to a podiatrist

It could be Plantar fasciitis. You can get support socks that are helpful. See your doctor though.

Is it underneath the heel ie on the sole of your foot?

It’s just on the inner edge painfully even to the lightest touch, I’m falling apart:) and can’t spell

For the time being, try elevating your foot and experiment to see if application of cold or warmth helps. I think cold is usually suggested but I have had foot problems which responded better to keeping my feet warm.

My husband had a lot of problems with the outside of his foot, real pain at night where the duvet touched his foot, you couldn’t see anything & his X-ray didn’t show anything. He went to see a Guy called The Foot Doctor (l’ll check his details out) he’s more than a Podiatrist but he knew what was wrong immediately, there was a lump between his toes that was pressing on a nerve. He treated him with a Laser (he had several treatments) it’s absolutely fine now, he also dealt with his dodgy in growing toenail…

I’m thinking of going to see him too as l have a Morton’s Neuroma which bothers me at times.

I think Specialists in their own area are often best for this kind of problem.

I have a friend with plantar fasciitis and she has pain in the arch of her foot and the underside of her heel. She has special insoles to support her foot. The condition has also triggered a secondary issue involving pain in the ligaments and tendons up the back of her ankle.I don't think what you're experiencing is typically PMR driven, but as PMR and steroids can cause deterioration in muscle tone and strength it may be that if already a weak area, then the PMR has escalated it.

This is who my husband sees - so might give you an idea of the kind of person to look for in your area.

I have intense pain in the corner of my left heel. It is not plantar fasciitis. It comes and goes. I find I cannot let it touch the sheets at night, so sleep with my leg hanging out of the bed!

That’s what MrT had, see my reply above 😉

Mine sounds like _multistrada’s and PMRPro’s problem. In the back of the heel on the side in the thick area.

WHERE in the heel?

_multistrada profile image
_multistrada in reply to PMRpro

Inside edge near the back just above where you stand on it but not under the pad

How strange! I seem to remember a short lived something similar - it hurt!!!! In the hard tissue at the edge of the heel?

I had tendinitis and heel pain on my first round of Pred. Ome minute it was agony , the next it had gone. Lasted about 6 weeks until i reduced my dose, then gradually faded away, but it left me with sore and tender legs and heels for ages after it had gone. Pred is known for this .

I get this too. Agony. I’ve had physio etc it’s Achilles tendinitis. A gel heal lift in your shoe helps. Don’t wear flat shoes, shoes with a heal better.Stretch your calves regularly. Step forward press the back heal down, lift and lower. Massage your calf work both along the muscle and across .Do it every day.

Hope this helps

Hi, I developed tendonitis during lockdown- diagnosed by podiatrist. Its taken a slow 5 months to be pain free- with insoles, new supportive shoes and gentle excercise. I agree with all the comments about general muscle weakness with PMR and pred. I'm now 20 months into my PMR journey, taking 4mg a day pred. Osteoporosis diagnosed along the way. I find elasticated ankle support helpful but podiatrist brilliant. Good luck.

I too have suffered with this, but was told it was gout, in a very unusual position granted but it was soon sorted with naproxen, then I was put on low dose alipurinol and it hasn’t come back

I have severe pain in both legs and feet. Had it for six years since I was put on very high dose of Prednisolone. Your low dose shouldn’t cause pain but we’re all different. I have recently started taking N Acetyl Cysteine to help repair the nerve damage and it seems to be helping. Might be worth a try.

Hello Diyfan, were you diagnosed with nerve damage due to Prednisolone? 🙂

Diyfan profile image
Diyfan in reply to Rachmaninov2

My neurologist had no idea why I suddenly developed chronic pain however it started the same day that Prednisolone was increased to 100mgs. I was almost suicidal with pain at first but thank goodness it started to reduce. It seems pretty obvious to me that it’s nerve damage. It’s taken six years and a bit of research and self help to get it to bearable levels. I hope you have a better experience.

Many thanks for your reply, sorry you have been suffering too, I know how awful it is. I have RD and have been taking 15mg Pred. recently reducing to 7mg, and 10mg Methotrexate. I have experienced increasing tingling, pins and needles and pain in my feet and lower legs. My GP thinks it may be toxic peripheral neuropathy caused by the Methotrexate. I asked if Prednisolone could also cause this and she said she didn’t think so. I’m waiting for a referral to a Neurologist and will ask about both medications. My GP also mentioned that not having enough Vit. B12 in the diet could cause nerve problems. I’m glad you have things under more control now, thank you for your good wishes. 🙂

I have had PMR/gCA 20 years. I have had Plantar Fasciitis with heel pain and a bone spur for 18 of those years. I no longer have pain in my feet or heels or ankles. I had surgery to release the fascia in my left foot. Here is what I have learned: first, learn to tape your arch. While You tube has a ton of videos on foot taping, most are over complicated with pricy equipment. I used one inch Zonas sport tape, available at most drug stores, and in bulk on the internet. I taped a piece of tape diagonally across the arch, come up on top of the foot, then one going the other way to make the letter x across the bottom of my arch. . Then 3 strips from left to right covering the x. Simple, and easy to remove in the evening. This supported better than any insert.

Second, I wore good shoes. Brooks ended up being the one brand that did not hurt my feet.

Third, I lost weight. I lost 30 pounds, but a weight loss of as little as 5 or 10 pounds can make a huge difference. Losing one pound is like taking 10 pounds of pressure off of your feet.

Third, I stopped taking a calcium supplement. It may all be in my head, but I found when I stopped the calcium supplement and started taking some magnesium instead, the bone spur stopped giving me fits. But, then I found over many years of experimenting that every time I take calcium supplements my all over body pain was a thousand times worse. I do not know why. Me and calcium, we don't play well together.

Fourth, Find a very good foot doctor. Although I could not wear the 300.00 inserts he suggested. Personally, I think losing weight and stopping calcium supplements helped me the most. And the taping can provide instant relief, especially for the bone sput.

Also, the evenings, take a small plastic soda pop bottle, coke has the best shape, fill 3/4 full of water, freeze. Then place on the floor when you are sitting and relaxing, and roll your foot back and forth over the frozen bottle.

I found the old old video that shows a simple way to tape your feet. I am not doctor, but I betcha that heel pain is a bone spur. the cause is usually plantar fasciitis.

This happened to me about a month ago. Very painful and it affected all normal activities. I was stretching and massaging the foot to little avail but then thought of trying a TENS machine. I found lots of Youtube clips showing where to put the electrodes. A week of using the TENS for between 20 and 30 minutes each morning before showering etc and the pain was gone. A couple of times since I have had some slight pain in the morning so use the TENS machine immediately. This has stopped any escalation of the symptoms. Good luck!

I've just come through a terrible bout of plantar fasciitis. I ignored it at first, but it wouldn't go away. Regular ice packs and ibuprofen worked. Took 10 days to clear.
