Hi all, I received my dexa scan appointment today for end of aug, is it just a scan then wait for results to go to my gp or do I see a dr there and then? If so what questions should i be asking?

This link in this post explains the procedure - healthunlocked.com/pmrgcauk...

It will be done by a technician who will not be in a position to answer your questions.

I got a call from my rheumatologist to go through results - did not have to wait too long

I normally just turn up at the hospital. Lie down for a few minutes, get scanned, then go home. I have to check the results with the receptionist if I want to know them. My GP has never bothered to tell me the results. You may have a better GP than me!

The technician isn’t authorised to discuss it with you. You need to wait until your doctor has the results. Maybe take a notebook and write down key things the doctor tells you. Question anything you don’t understand and any decisions that seem to lack evidence. Ask for a copy of the numbers. I was told that I would end up in a wheelchair if I didn’t take Alendronic Acid. I insisted on a DEXA scan. After the first one I was told that I had the bones of a 30 year old. Two years later my results were still deemed good. Next year I will be due another one.

Hi. I had the scan and my results were sent to me by post within about 10 days. Really efficient.

Morning KW, speed of results will depend on your docs, I had my scan on a Saturday and a text from doctors on the Sunday saying that there was no problem and results were good, the actual figures appeared in my records a couple of days later.

Surprisingly I was given my results straight after the scan. The lady even printed them off for me after explaining what they meant! I’m going for my second scan in a couple of weeks, will have to see what happens this time

Same here, although I suspect that is standard practice in New Zealand.

Where in NZ? Daughter lives on South Island, Canterbury Plains….can’t wait to see her and NZ again…been too long!

Should have been there your summer 20/21, now looking at (and hoping) summer 22/23..🤞🤞

I'm in Auckland. But I probably know somebody who knows somebody who knows her. NZ is like that.

Yes I know….did visit Auckland last time and met a couple of people off forum…one very kindly guided me around, including lunch at Sky Tower - typical Kiwi hospitality!
