Hi, Id appreciate a response to this please.

When starting to taper, is it common to feel rough for a few days, ie a few aches returning, until your body gets used to the lower dose? or should there be no difference in the way you feel?

Quick answer - yes.

Your body takes 2-4 days to adjust to the new dose, sometimes it’s just a feeling of not being on usual form, sometimes it’s a more noticeable.

I found on higher doses with GCA, I felt a bit irritable for a few days. ..once I hit a lot lower dose, I startled to use a slower taper - they are designed to stop the steroid withdrawal symptom you are experiencing.

This is just my version, there are others.

It tends to depend on how big a change in dose you are trying to achieve - if you make it as small as possible and use one of the slowed tapers we go on about on the forum you can improve that "withdrawal rheumatism" a lot. But yes, it happens to a lot of people until their body gets used to the change in dose. As long as it started immediately and then improves over time, it is just the change in dose. If it takes a few days and then steadily gets worse it is more likely to be that you are now at too low a dose for what you need at present. However, by the time you get to the end of the tapering month, you shouldn't feel worse than you did at the last dose and that is partly why we recommend having a few weeks at the new dose to be sure it is still enough.

I always had withdrawal symptoms from about 1-4 for a few days, sometimes a week. That would be headache, fatigue and fluey aches. It changed a bit as the dose went down. The size of the reduction makes a difference too. How have you been reducing?
